All guests in public areas will wear a face mask in accordance with Mendocino County Health Safety requirements. Suggestions: shorter showers and flush less frequent. Recycle melted ice water by watering our garden. We do understand the hardship for our guests and appreciate your assistance in this time of drought.

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Hill House Inn sits on Palette Drive off of the Shoreline Highway 1 in historic Mendocino California. We are ideally seated near the Little River Airport, and the larger Sonoma County Airport and San Francisco International Airport are further away with a scenic drive.
Services

Well the pictures sure look good on the net... made reservations for 2 nights. When checking we noticed that there was bird droppings near the front door on a large piece of cardboard. You had to step aside to get in the front door just about. Upon checking in we were told that there would be no Breakfast even though this was billed as a B&B. We understand the issues with Covid and all so we over looked that ... We took the "key" to our room and upon entering we were hit with a foul stench of wet, moldy, aroma in the room. We knew the smell and knew that mold wasn't far away

Great weekend getaway! Super friendly staff. Perfect location. Rooms are dated, but I found them to be charming.

Positives: My husband and I slept well. The bed though not as firm as I prefer, seemed to allow us a good night's rest. The room was large. The bathroom very small. The bathroom was clean, and we were given clean towels when we asked for them. Since wi-fi was not working we were saved by a princess phone from which one could make a phone call! Lovely gardens and ample parking was very gratifying.

Not so positive: Service at the front desk was as has been described by other reviewers. Our first encounter was with Sylvia, who did not look up when we entered a dark lobby checkin

Price was acceptable I guess - - for a place that is more run down than it looked in the photos... Also it is convenient to town; just a couple minutes' walk.

The outdoor steps to the 2nd floor have extremely worn out ugly carpet over them; if expense is an issue, why couldn't the management simply buy some large remnants to cut up to fit each step? And the rooms don't seem to have been updated in decades. One good point was our corner room was spacious.

The woman at the front desk doesn't know what hospitality means; made people in my party feel like we were disturbing

Shocked at the low score on this place. We found this place at the last minute during a spontaneous trip up the coast. We couldn't have been more delighted.

Our room was cute, quaint, and spacious. Our favorite part though.... The grounds! What a beautiful garden! Our patio was perfect. It was peaceful, quiet, and very private.

This is on the top of my list of places to stay when we come back.

There was a lack of some amenities, but traveling at the tail end of travel restrictions during the pandemic, this is something we totally understand and respect.

This place has pretty curb appeal and garden. The room seemed clean, def spacious, & I left well rested with the bed being good for my back. A few things they seriously should consider is 1) A small fridge for the rooms. 2) The water comes out clear but when I went to take a bath the water was yellowish. I let the front desk know but she didn't seem to know anything about it. She mentioned she would notify the manager and maintenance & I hope she does. Not know why it was like that I only ended up taking one shower during my three night stay. Definitely a necessity to look into! 3

We came here for our anniversary every year for the first 10 years we were married. We thought it would be fun to come back for our 25th. Sorry to say we were very disappointed. Let's say we have aged much better than the Inn has over the past 15 years. The place is old and worn out. I don't think they do any maintenance. The entry doors to the lobby were faded and in terrible shape. It's hard to believe they couldn't even stain them to at least look inviting. The room, furniture, bathroom is very tired looking. The towel rack in the bathroom was coming off the wall. There

Only reason for the 2 stars is that the staff was nice and friendly. Aside from that this place deserves 1 star. I'm not sure if they were going for an antique look, but it just comes off as old and run down. I booked a "garden" view and all we could see from our window was the parking lot, a big empty grass field, and the highway...

Would literally rather stay at a motel 8 next time

I was really excited as we drove up and saw all the flowers and lovely smell of jasmine. That excitement quickly changed to disappointment as we walked in the lobby to find the front desk clerk asleep. She was so passed out I was not sure if she was dead. Once she awoke, she assigned us a room, but it was not what we had requested. We had paid for a King bed with an ocean view and she gave us two queen beds with a garden view. And when I say garden view I mean a few flowers with a view of the parking lot. As we were unloading our stuff, the people that checked in after us asked if we could

Sadly, the restaurant and bar are closed until further notice. No breakfast (not even the crappy one they used to provide) and no vending machines. Minimum 2 night stay, No housekeeping during your stay; empty your own trash cans and make your own bed. Staff not friendly nor welcoming. Ocean view rooms (more expensive) aren't; unless you have binoculars with you.

On the plus side, the room was very nice, comfortable and peaceful, and the electric fan heater on the wall worked well. No AC though.

The place looks jaded and shabby (like Mendocino in general). The gardens are unkempt and the

It was 4th of July weekend and my friends wanted a quick getaway since it was a long weekend. Rather than driving to SoCal or Nevada, we came across this inn on Expedia that was only 3 hours away. The pictures showed a very quaint and rustic inn just minutes from downtown. There was only one room left so we booked it.

Right before you turn into the lot, you'll pass by a cemetery on your right. It was a bit creepy to know that we'll be right next door to it; who knows who might be lurking around your room at night! :P As we drove forward, the surrounding landscape of the inn was

The good news is a Great location! I guess that is what we paid for because the rest is not so good news:

Not a very friendly staff
Motel 6 quality towels! (small and scratchy)
Cheap TP and not much of it
Noisy pipes
Noisy restroom fans
No basics like a refrigerator or microwave

I get the location and for the price at least a decent towel! Please!

The people running this place are AWFUL.

They left me and my kids stranded without a word, 10 hours from home. We were staying with family when COVID19 hit and booked a room for a night A WEEK BEFORE so that we didn't have to drive straight home after elderly family said we couldn't visit, only to walk up to a sign on the door that they were closed and we were S.O.L. When we called BOTH numbers they had left on the sign, there was no answer.

A local saw us and got someone who worked there to come out, who said that the general manager was aware of our reservation but had advised not

This hotel is pretty from the outside and when you first enter your room, you will be pleased until you discover the layout doesn't quite work.
Trip Advisor rates this as a 3 star hotel. I'd put it at a solid 2.5, definitely better than a typical Motel 6. Nice location, within easy walking distance of Mendocino. The rooms are spacious and I appreciate having the vanity light on a dimmer switch for those nightly trips to the bathroom. Our clean room had two queens and a love seat that faced away from The TV. There was a small table for dining or work but no chair unless you wanted

After reading the other reviews we were hesitant, but I am so glad that we decided to take the plunge and grab a Groupon for this short, but well worth it, stay. I know that going away, driving 4 1/2 hours right before Christmas may seem odd to some, but I really wanted to get away and soak in the Christmas season. So glad that we did! Mendocino was a perfect choice! I had not been here before, but what a wonderful town, giving the feel of Cape Cod in Maine. In fact, this hotel was used as were many of the other buildings in town, in the show "Murder She Wrote". Jessica Fletcher&apos

Oh once again how I wish I could give negative stars!!!!!! This place is one of the worse hotels I've ever stayed in! The beds were seriously uncomfortable and felt like we were sleeping on a brick! The building is not maintained and it seems the owners don't care at all about upgrades. The dingy lace shower curtain looked like it's been there for 20 years. The ceilings had cob webs. The restroom was old and the toilet sit was so flimsy it was almost falling off the toilet.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place! It should be called the Hell House rather than Hill House
