The Montessori School of Iowa City is a non-sectarian, private independent school. We are a 501(c)(3) organization governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees. As one of the oldest Montessori schools on the continent, we celebrated our 50th birthday in 2012. We are an Associate School Member of the American Montessori Society.
Lakshmi Kripalani, who was trained by Dr. Maria Montessori in India, was recruited by telegram in 1962 to start our first Primary (3 to 6 years old) class. Time magazine had recently published an article about the revival of Montessori in the United States. In 2017, we expanded our program to include Pre-Primary (2 to 3 year old) classes.

According to the American Montessori Society, Montessori education dates back to 1907, when Maria Montessori opened the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House, in a low-income district of Rome. Her unique philosophy sparked the interest of educators worldwide, and in the following decades Montessori schools opened throughout Europe, in North and South America.
During the first three years of a child's life, their brain is developing rapidly. They take in everything around them, absorbing it like a sponge. Our Montessori Pre-Primary program (for two-year-olds) is designed with this in mind, to support your child's development through guided exploration of our thoughtfully and beautifully prepared environment.
The Montessori philosophy of education is founded on respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment. Peaceful environments are created and designed to attract and engage the children by meeting their physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual needs. Children with a broad range of interests and abilities learn to interact respectfully as a community.
To attend the Montessori School, a child must be two years of age to join the Pre-Primary class and three years of age or older and fully toilet-trained to join the Primary. We encourage prospective parents to visit our school and experience a guided classroom observation. The first step in enrolling a child is the registration.
