Important teachers: Erich Schiffmann opened the door to the depths of asana practice, Chuck Miller opened the door to Mysore, where Steve finally made the study-trip in 1994. Although he accepted Pattabhi Jois as his teacher, it was Sharath who taught Steve much of the tangible material of the practice while in India.
For those years in Luxshimpuram, Sharath was a model of kind strength. Steve returned to Mysore many times and was personally granted permission to teach the system in 1998 by Pattabhi Jois. He began Mysore-Style in Santa Barbara that year. He continues to offer deep gratitude to Guruji, and to those of his guru, T. Krishnamacharya, and so on.

Most of the classes we teach on an ongoing basis are Mysore-Style Ashtanga, a class closely modeled upon Sri K. Pattabhi Jois' teaching method as historically practiced by him, his daughter Saraswati and his grandson Sharath at their Ashtanga Research Institute in Mysore, South India.
This is a teacher assisted class where students go at their own pace with practices of varying lengths and levels, from beginning and intermediate and into advanced series.It allows students to go deeply into their own experience of the practice while still maintaining the essential and reassuring experience of a close relationship with a teacher.

1. Start with led classes, which are basically medium difficulty. You will be talked through all the moves. No memorization needed. No experience of either Ashtanga or even yoga needed. Expect a work out. At some point this will give you enough experience with the system to feel comfortable with the Mysore class.
Parking is available along the street and in two city lots, one on the corner of Garden Street and Cabrillo, and one on Cabrillo Blvd. Single day and Saturday/Sunday only participation will open up, space permitting, in February. Let us know you would like to participate. We will confirm space availability at which time you will need to send check or cash to complete your registration.
Ashtanga is this amazing practice that throws us into a face to face encounter with ourselves. There is no hiding, no escaping. The journey feels arduous at times as fear, anger, arrogance, doubt, laziness, instability and other obstacles are uncovered and revealed. We show up day after day, humbled, with faith that buried beneath all this psycho-somatic confusion is the burning light of truth, love and compassion.
