In 1926, two educational pioneers, Dr. Carleton W. Washburne, Superintendent of the Winnetka Public Schools, and Mrs. Rose Alschuler, a national leader in nursery school education and founding member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children ("NAEYC") began collaborating on an idea for a preschool housed within a public school.

They shared the belief that the teachers and children of both schools would benefit. In 1927, the Winnetka Public School Nursery opened its doors. The school's initial programs reflected a willingness to innovate and experiment. WPSN was established as a not-for-profit school dedicated to the following objectives: sound child development, family life education, service to the community, and research.
Services
Our program for children is play-based and has been since we were founded in 1926. We've always believed that play is the work of young children, their most effective way to learn. Cognitive development (the goal of academic work) is approached playfully utilizing materials and activities that children truly care about.
At WPSN we are acutely aware of the importance of a successful beginning at preschool. For this reason we start each school year with a home visit by both co-teachers to allow children to meet us first in a familiar and safe environment. Our gentle separation process allows for school visits, a near-by parent, if needed, and respects individual differences among children.
At this age, most children start to become active observers and questioners of everything around them. The WPSN Older 2's Inquirers class is designed to maximize this innate curiosity to nurture the key developmental milestones of this age group. This begins with the start of the school year. At WPSN we are acutely aware of the importance of a successful beginning at preschool.
WPSN's program for 3 year olds is called "Collaborators" because starting collaborative play is a key hallmark of this age group. At this age, most children start to form relationships and move from parallel play to truly playing together. The WPSN Threes Collaborators class is designed to maximize this developing social and emotional skill to nurture the key developmental milestones of this age group.
