Delaware Bushido Academy is located in the heart of Smyrna Delaware, where Sensei Howard Steele and instructors have been serving the Middletown, Smyrna, and Dover area for over 18 years. Okinawan Isshinryu Karate is a martial art focused on self defense utilizing hand and foot striking techniques, blocking and movement to control the distance from one's opponent.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a self defense martial art using realistic standing self defense techniques, striking, throws, take downs and grappling in order to escape attack. Delaware Bushido Academy is the ONLY facility I will train at. From a top-notch instructor to the greatest positive support system, I thoroughly enjoy my 5 days a week training there.

We aim to build a family oriented, community based, clean and healthy dojo where students of all ages can come and learn. At Delaware Bushido Academy, we teach realistic Self Defense and effective Fitness classes. Utilizing a positive, clean, and safe atmosphere we encourage a healthy lifestyle and train Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Isshinryu Karate for the best in self protection.
Here at Delaware Bushido Academy we are proud to represent the world renown Gracie Family as a Gracie Academy Certified Training Center. This allows us a direct lineage to the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, GrandMaster Helio Gracie. With direct access to the GrandMaster's eldest son, Master Rorion Gracie and his Grandsons Ryron and Rener Gracie we pride ourselves on teaching Gracie Jiu Jitsu with the utmost honor and integrity.
Utilizing a specific workout formula coupled with exercises unique to our program we have created a fun and safe atmosphere for all to be successful. Whether you are looking to lose weight, boost your cardio-vascular strength or get in shape for your next competition PosiFit is a great way to go. Overall, we feel that success lies in longevity in exercise, healthy eating and positive attitude.
The beginner student starts with the mastery of our self-defense program before moving to what most refer to as the basics. We feel this is the fastest way to street readiness. This program includes everything from wrist grabs, tackles, headlocks, sucker punches and grounded tactics.
We feel this program sets our academy apart from other traditional dojos who may not address the threat of a grounded attack or self-defense in general until their advanced programs.This is the case for both adult and youth, however our Youth Beginner Program, ages 6-12, is designed around school aged threats like the bully and the child predator.

I had the pleasure of learning from Howard today. I’m a 3rd degree black belt and out rank Howard, I spent four hours learning from him today. I’m so thoroughly impressed with his teaching ability I can’t wait to visit again. The explanation of why we do certain things was amazing, his professionalism impressive.

My two kids attended the Academy in their formative years to try out Karate. Although they were fickle, and picked up other after school activities, we were thoroughly impressed with the Bushido Academy. The culture, attitude and positive environment still shine through both of my children. I am very grateful for the impact this had on them. Delaware Bushido Academy is a great place for adults and kids to train and learn self- defense. Howard Steele, the owner and head instructor is very knowledgeable, motivating, and consistently provides informative, engaging classes. The training area is always maintained in a clean neat manner. We have trained under Howard for 3 years and it has been a great experience. My kids love going, and I can see them actively using the life lessons that are mixed in with the self-defense instruction. Delaware Bushido Academy is a top notch martial art facility with a great group of instructors and members. Howard Steele is the owner and head instructor at Delaware Bushido Academy. My kids and I have trained under Howard for several years now in Gracie Jiu Jitsu and I can honestly say that he is not only my instructor, mentor but a "friend". There is no better place around if you want to learn real self defense in a safe, positive, clean and encouraging atmosphere.

It's the best for our family! We all participate in something they offer. Karate. Jujitsu the posi fit class. We meet awesome families. And have made friendships simply from socializing with other parents. The leadership is always upbeat, positive and fun. We love it and are literally there 5 days a week. All the instructors are professional and give 100% to my kids. I appriciate them all and love what they have to offer there.
