Black Sheep Winery introduced Rhone varietals to Calaveras County Foothills and have been recognized for our award winning wines, year after year. Serving up a wide variety of white and red wines from Chardonnay, Cinsault, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a Port-style dessert wine in our historic little yellow farmhouse on Main Street.
Black Sheep Winery arrived in Murphys with the 1984 harvest. From that first harvest we produced our 1984 Amador Zinfandel. The wine was styled in a big, bold way like nobody else could do. That's what makes us Black Sheep; we're different from the rest of the flock. We feature small batches of limited release wines handcrafted from high quality grapes grown in Calaveras and Amador Counties.

This place was great! My wife loves the wine lol I don't drink but I still love the vibe up here. She got a bottle of wine a d I got some Frog Balls 😏 relax lol there just pickled brussel sprouts haha. The lady who worked there was super great. Ii think her name was Nicole she referred up to the Murphys Hotel for dinner and she even called and got us a reservation. The world needs more people like her :)

First off: they moved. Right down the street a half block to a tasting room that is a little hidden, but has a lovely tiny park / lawn in front to share a glass or two.
The are, compared to the rest of Murphys, one of the few "bargain" brands. However they will surprise you. My first taste (after spending $30 up the street) was "$10 for this?" and instant buyers regret.
So, stop here, get a gauge on taste / value, then travel around a bit. You'll likely come back for a case of wine.

Worth a visit if you have a day in Murphys. The name captures their philosophy pretty well. Most wines are more in the economy bucket, decent quality but not particularly inspired or special. The Lily Pad white is an interesting blend of Marsanne, Rousanne and Gewurztraminer. For $10 certainly worth getting a few. Competes well with many basic Chardonnays. They claim they make bold Zins. We tasted two. Pretty well made and at $20 worth getting one, but they were both not that bold and certainly nothing to remember and build a reputation on. The tasting room is eclectic. The staff is friendly.
