Like most western states, Washington is a community property state. Early on, western states adopted community property regimes in order to entice women to move out west. The idea was that if women were granted actual property rights, then they would hazard the journey to the frontier. It worked. This property rights regime still governs marital property rights division in Washington to this day.

Washington State uses a child support formula to determine the base monthly child support amount. The factors include the number of children, their ages, and the incomes of the parents. Depending on the variables plugged into the formula, the base child support payment will be anywhere from $200 up to $3,500 per month.

I had a consultation with Christopher Pitts about setting up a prenuptial agreement and left confident and well informed about my options. Christopher is incredibly knowledgeable on family/marriage law, as well as the history and evolution of it in Washington vs other states. He explained the pros/cons of having a prenuptial agreement vs a post-nuptial agreement, and even the alternatives to a formal marriage in Washington.
