Metropolitan Bakery
Since 1993, we've been tempting Philadelphians with freshly baked breads, pastries, snacks and our famous granola. And now that we ship throughout the U.S. - we can tempt you, too. Filled with a combination of fresh tart apples and buttery caramelized apples, our take on this all-American dessert is unusually rich and flavorful.

Enjoy warmed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream. A moist sourdough bread enhanced with pumpkin puree, tart cranberries, and warm spices. Delicious as an hors d'oeuvres, sliced thin, with a spread of ripe Camembert or creamy Stilton. Feeling adventurous? Try it as a base for this year's Thanksgiving stuffing.

An absolute gem. Best croissants, great cannelles, satisfying scones, fantastic kouign amanns. I've also enjoyed the millet muffin, which is similar to a corn muffin as other reviewers have pointed out. The French berry rolls are also good when fresh. I don't think there's a single item on the menu I wouldn't try.

They stopped making rolls which as a single person I miss. The chocolate cake that I bought for Christmas cost $50 was dry and not too flavorful. Big disappointment.

The food is VERY tasty, and it feels like home made, I loved it! Specially the paistries!! I'm not American so usually American sweets are way too sweet for my taste, but everything I got here was just right! (butter cookies specially) And the staff is very helpful, will come back anytime I'm in town!

I don't understand some of the previous reviews. The owners, who are often onsite, working, are the nicest people in the world. Everyone who works there is nice and does a wonderful job. They sell the best bread in the city. I wouldn't have made it through the pandemic without them since I was one of the few people who didn't start baking my own sourdough bread. If you call ahead with your order, there won't be a wait.

Fabulous bakery! Must try everything. We used to go there at least twice a week when we lived in the area. Their breads are baked to perfection (and so are the other baked goods).

Terrible coffee and food even worse customer service. The owner is extremely rude, the place needs a real makeover.

I have bought desserts for family events (and myself) many times and people are always excited both on appearance and taste. MB is not cheap, but I feel I get value, particularly on cakes and pies--with the chocolate layer cake or pecan pie (around holidays) you get no skimping on ingredients and an impressive dessert that will serve several people. Bread is also top notch (you will not find a better croissant in Philadelphia), but the cost is usually high for my purposes. They run out of stuff, so order early or get there first thing if you need something particular.

Really glad that I finally got a chance to visit. Overall I gave 4.3 maybe? but 5 eventually for the reasonable price. Both croissant and carrot layer cake were good although not the best best. So did the French rye I got.

I always love visiting this place. Everyone is friendly, and I usually end up with too many delicious pastries… but that is OK! It’s one of the best true French style bakeries in the city. Go here for a darn good croissant or seasonal dessert!

Best service in Philadelphia. When I order a mocha, I'll only do it from Metropolitan Bakery. It's not too sweet, but sweet enough. Did I mention the service is great? Just an awesome store worth visiting. They have more than coffee, too. The cakes look amazing. I also want to go back to try some of their cheeses.

They have me order inside and wait outside, even though I was the only person in the store and I think that may be why they forgot about my panini and it was burnt I also got a caramel chai latte which was good but very sweet. Employees were nice. Maybe it was just an off day for them.

Wanted to stop in to buy a baguette for a meal I'm making today. Waited in line for 15 min on a busy Sunday. While waiting, an older woman w/ short white hair and glasses ran out from the back into the main seating area and yelled at all the students for taking up table space with their laptops. She came back to the register and was curt with a customer who asked if a bread they had tasted sour and she responded, "well it's not a SOURDOUGH so it wouldn't be SOUR then would it?" Then when it was my turn (with a million people waiting behind me) said "I'll be with

I've been to the Metropolitan Cafe before but this was my worst experience here.

The wait was ridiculously long. I waited 15 minutes to order at the cashier. After 40 minutes I asked the manager where my food was only for him to tell me that there wasn't an order in the system for me. I ended up getting a refund and walking out of there.

The only reason I gave them 2 stars is that the manager expressed his regret and ended up giving me a voucher for the next time I go to the cafe. But I wasted an hour at that cafe and I didn't even get any food.

We stayed at the hotel next to this cafe and enjoyed their coffee and bakery. The staff is very friendly and ready to assist you with all your needs.
We noticed that they also operate the shop in the very smart way- all one day old bakeries are 50% off
Oh, they have big variety of salads, panini, sandwiches, etc
I would recommend this place to everyone!

I made an impromptu stop here when searching for a place with WiFi where I could get some work done. At 4pm on a Friday, the café was almost completely empty which was perfect. I had just finished a bunch of annual checkups/appointments, and honestly, I was in no mood to chat and socialize. A nearly empty and quiet café was quite heavenly. With the weekend on the horizon, I really just wanted to get my work done and get some food in my belly while at it!

Since I had missed lunch, I decided to spring for a sandwich. I got the basic egg sandwich which consisted of scrambled eggs in a bread of

I come here whenever I'm in this side of town. Decent selection of baked goods on a daily basis, quality coffee, and friendly staff. Day olds at half price are a personal favorite when I want to buy a bunch of items for groups at the Rotunda. Croissants are to die for. Limited seating but WiFi and power outlets make it a nice break spot.

I'm not sure why I gave 4 stars last time. Anyway, it's been a year since my last visit and delicious baked goods were calling my name (especially in this temperamental weather), so I decided to make a trip to Metropolitan Bakery as my reward for exercising in the morning. I stopped by after my run and grabbed a croissant and a power muffin. I'm munching on the muffin as I am typing this, and it's a very well chosen and satisfying reward for sticking with my resolution! I would get the power muffin over millet muffin since it has millet plus a whole bunch of other goodness plus

I live right near this bakery, but have only passed by every day and only came here for the second time ever the other day before my first class. Searching for a convenient place to grab a cup of tea and lunch and sit down with my readings for the day, I decided to finally stop by.

I do enjoy the mission of the store, with the local art and jewelry being displayed for sale on the walls, and it seems like all of its choices are more natural (with a lot of vegan and creative options). However, the take out is extremely slow (the first time I came here I ordered a lox sandwich to go, for which I
