Sarcone's Bakery
Over the years, Sarcone's has become a staple in South Philadelphia, not only for its bread but also for its integrity. This is a fact that we understand, appreciate and take very seriously. Our pledge is to continue to retain this standard and to continue to raise the bar even higher in the future.

The rich history of Sarcone's Bakery began in the year 1918 when an Italian immigrant by the name of Luigi Sarcone opened up shop at 758 South Ninth Street, Philadelphia. Ever since then, it has been all about the bread. Louis started working in the bakery as a young boy, and later went to Villanova on a football scholarship.

Best bread in one of the best sand which cities in the world. Not much to say except for some personal opinions and small tips

Go for the seeded Italian roll
Cash only
Go early or you'll miss out

Take home a fresh seeded and go home and make 3 meals that day centered around the bread

Placed an order for a whole cheese pizza ($30). Had to call the day before to have it ready by 10am the next morning (that is the earliest we could pick it up - they start making the pizzas at 9 or 9:30). Asked the lady on the phone how to store the pizza and she said either fridge or freezer - both are ok.
Tried a slice that had been sitting out most of the day both as is and reheated in a toaster oven. Both were good. The sauce is nice and garlicky and the bread was fresh with a nice crunch on the crust. The cheese was the least favorite as it tasted very generic.
We also tried their hoagie

Stopped by to try their famous tomato pie. The pie itself was fine, if a bit saucy for my tastes. However, I was very disappointed to see that no one who works there was wearing a mask, despite the fact that the city government is requesting employees and patrons of businesses to do so. The vibe felt intentionally antagonistic to me. I'd rather take my money someplace where the business actually cares about the well-being of its customers and employees.

I tried a sesame baguette from here and it was fresh and delicious. Crispy outside and soft inside. Perfect for making your own sandwiches. They are cash only. $2.83 for the baguette.

Yeah their is a reason why this place has been open 100 years. When passing through Philadelphia I just had to swing by. We walked from rittenhouse sq. It is 1.6 miles eat way. I mean everything isn't cheese steak in philly is it? Their tomato pie sold buy the slice is just right. Not dense, super flavorful and eats well cold. How could I stop by a bakery and not try their other items. Their flacky loafs or yummy Stromboli's are also delicious. I can see this place standing for another 100 years.

Difficult to review as I have mixed feelings about my experience here.
Thought I'd try their tomato pie. In the past, I have always gotten a half or whole pie at various bakeries. That wasn't an option here as they charge $2.50 for ONE SLICE!
Decided to get four. It was more like a deep dish so the slices DID have some volume but I still felt overcharged. Slices were bursting with tomato flavor and the crust was fine although I prefer a thinner pie.

I then asked if they had cannoli. She said only chocolate. I ordered two.

TEN BUCKS!

FIVE dollars for a freaking cannoli??

So, I paid

As new resident of Philadelphia, we wanted to try Tomato Pie. We were surprised to be served a slice at room temperature. After one bite, my wife's eyes opened wide, she was amazed. The crispy exterior dough and soft inside were delicious, but their gravy is the star of the show. Tangy and sweet, just wow. Their cookies are great too.

I've only tried pizza and some bread, but that has earned the five stars. The crust is wonderfully doughy with a crisp exterior. Their sauce is brimming with flavor, sweetness, garlic-y goodness, and savory depth. Bring a napkin -- you might wear some sauce -- but it's a worthwhile accessory.

We've also ordered their long bread (order at least a day or two in advance). This thing is a behemoth -- easily several pounds and probably close to 3 feet in length (don't quote me on anything, I'm full of fisherman's tales). If I remember correctly, it costs $5. Don&apos

I'm not sure why I've never written a review for Sarcone's before but here we go! Absolutely delicious bread! I love their rolls and stop by as often as I can to pick one up. They are super inexpensive, baked fresh, and delicious! While I am not a fan of seeded rolls in general, they offer lots of types of bread. I have never tried their tomato pie but it always looks enticing and is definitely on my list. Last time I went in, I noticed they had lots of pastries and cookies and whatnot and even had stromboli! I had no idea. I guess when I go in I just say "one roll please, unseeded

Best bread in the country pure and simple!! I'm nearly certain I'd eat my own limbs ground finely on that bread with no complaints! Their square pizza is tasty too with gorgeous complex and flaky fibers. I cannot speak to any other items, not even sure if they have other items

I love tomato pie so, after hearing so much about Sarcone's, I stopped in for a few slices. They had already sold out of the first pies by 1030am on Sunday, but were already preparing more. Tomato pie is best eaten cold, so I took the slices home and had them a hour or so later. Super delicious sauce with a nice maybe 1/2" thick crust with crispy outer edge. Definitely worth a stop when visiting the Italian Market.

I ordered a slice of the cheese and tomato pie from this south Philly bakery stalwart.

The bread on the slice was excellent. It was light, fluffy, and lightly oily. The sauce was nice and garlicky with and the tomato brought tons of umami to the pie.

The crust was a bit dry, and the cheese was somewhat meager in portion and flavor.

Decided to try out sarcones bakery I was in the area visiting from Delaware. So I got a giant seeded roll. You can see why sarcones has been opened for over 100 years. It's really cool inside really old school vibe. You got everything on display in the front. I made a cheesesteak with the roll I got from sarcones the roll is delicious. You cant get these types of rolls in Delaware so I'll definitely make the drive up to get these rolls.

We moved away from the Italian Market 15 years ago, and any time I get back, I get a sandwich from someplace the uses Sarcone's rolls (seeded!) or head directly there.

I was in town last week and stayed a block away. Needless to say, I was eating tomato pie for a late breakfast and bought a seeded roll to have back at my hotel with cheese.

Their tomato pie is AMAZING!

Just know, it's not pizza, it's SO MUCH better! Bread dough makes it light and fluffy but crispy on the edges and against the pan. The gravy is thick, rich and chunky with just a little sprinkle of cheese.

Their tomato pie is amazing! I got the one that had cheese on the top, and I ate it on one of the benches outside the shop. There isn't a ton of space inside. I got a corner slice, and the crust was AMAZING. I would definitely recommend asking for one if there are some available. I wish I had more time here, so I could get some of their bread. I can only imagine how great it is.

I also got one of their cannoli, which was good but nothing amazing. However, they had some cookie samples, and those were really great.

The review is for the tomato pie.

The corner crust is super crunchy. My favorite part of any pizza. The sauce is fresh and not heavy and sweet. Very refreshing. However the bread part is soggy. Unfortunately it's not my favorite tomato pie

When you take a visit to South Philly you have an abundance of iconic landmarks, or known treasures that just stand out we'll say. One of them can be the image of Rocky running up 9th street in the Italian Market section of South Philadelphia waiving to everyone . The other is a visit to the Godfather of Chocolate, to fulfill that craving you may have. The endless shopping while eating is just cray cray. Rival bakeries, restaurants, and shops just trying to real you in types of challenges. You know I'm game, I'm always in it, to win it.

Then you have Sarcone's Bakery with

I live in Philly for a little while and this bakery makes the best tomato pie so when I was back in the city it was a must for me... if you are in philly I would say the tomato pie and Philly cheesesteaks are a must. For a couple bucks you get an awesome piece of pie. They can sell out of it so would get there before 12.

This place is the best. It just SMELLS legit inside, the way any great bakery should. After all, this place is an institution.

Sarcone's tomato pie is a definite highlight. A sturdy and soft base sits beneath smooth pureed tomatoes, sprinkled with oregano and tiny flecks of hard Italian cheese. They also have pizza in the same style.

The rolls and cookies look great, though I've never tried them. Check out their deli down the street too.
