Services
We opened in 2013 and have been serving folks in the Ravenswood/North Center area and beyond ever since. The motivation to add our shop to Chicago's robust cycling scene was borne of a desire to gently encourage a new, accountable, sustainable, non-judgmental sensibility in the bike shop world. Bike shops, although somewhat "green" by definition, still unload an unnecessary amount of useful resources into the unidirectional waste stream.
The good folks at Kona make a fine array of city, touring, utility, off-road, and kids bikes. Thoughtfully designed and expertly executed, the Kona ride consistently gets rave reviews from experts and plebes alike. By way of Milwaukee, WI come an array of thoughtfully designed, affordable, stylish bikes that roll every bit as smoothly as higher-priced options.
The good folks at Kona make a fine array of city, touring, utility, off-road, and kids bikes. Thoughtfully designed and expertly executed, the Kona ride consistently gets rave reviews from experts and plebes alike. We typically stock the following models from Kona and often place special orders for others, ensuring proper fit and purpose for you.
We are Chicago's newest Gunnar dealer. The company's pedigree reaches all the way back to the earliest days of Schwinn in Chicago, and the bikes are made nearly locally, in Waterford, WI. Gunnar offers a full range of semi-custom frames made of the finest American cro-moly steel tubing. You're not likely to find a better riding steel bike, regardless of cost, and they build up super light.
This is the bicycle that kicked the American cargo bike scene into high gear. The dimensions, capacity, adaptability, durability, and ease of handling bring your cargo bike options into clear focus. It rides like a regular bike, but it can carry 250 lbs of Xtra stuff. You need to pedal it to believe it, so stop in for a test ride.

Stopped in to pick up a bike bell that I wanted, and Green Machine was one of the stockiest listed for Spurcycle. They're right in the neighborhood, so I'm glad I got to support a local business (Green Machine) whilst also supporting a "local" business (I'm pretty sure I learned Spurcycle is based in Oregon, where I'm from).

Lots of stuff in the shop, and I may stop by again to get a bike pump. They do charge a 3% surcharge for credit cards, so either take cash or be prepared to pay the surcharge.

TERRIBLE. Avoid this place: there's many more bike shops you can spend your money at. My friend felt very disrespected.

Cannot agree with the positive reviews here, although I'm glad they served other people well. Took my new and perfectly good bike in for one of their tuneups and came away with a chain that now slips every time I need to pedal hard. Took it back twice for them to undo this but the problem remains.

I had just moved to the area when the stem on my road bike broke so I took it to Green Machine and they installed a new one at a fair price and with a quick turnaround and even did a lookover on my bike to see if anything else was off. Took my bike out to Colorado a week later and couldn't have been happier with the new stem. Will definitely go back and would definitely recommend this shop to anyone in Chicago!

Great neighborhood bike shop! I have had my bike serviced there numerous times and purchased accessories. They are very knowledgeable and helpful bike mechanics. I would always trust their advice and they have bailed me out of a few jams. You'll see reviews here that they can be a little prickly to deal with, but so what. If we don't support vital businesses like this there will be none left.

Charlie and Ezra are terrific and so helpful. A couple years back my wife and I did a two week bike trip in Cape Cod and they helped us with a purchase of a Kona Sutra for me and the back and forth of sending the bikes to Boston. All worked out totally flawlessly. I am looking to purchase another bike and of course will solely deal with Green Machine!

I visited to get my bike tuned up in what was surely an insanely busy COVID period, but Ezra was still very helpful, understanding, and patient with his customers. Beside that, I appreciated the quality of his work. The first gear shift after picking up my bike was an instant confirmation that he took the time to assess my bike and address what could be improved. (For context, I had an old bike that had a really janky gear-shifting experience. Needless to say, Ezra has improved that significantly.)
In any case, Ezra does good work and treats customers well. I'd definitely recommend a visit.

Worked with Ezra on a semi-custom touring build and it’s basically the perfect bike. They’re pretty busy but they took care of business. Professional. Ezra knows what he’s doing and I appreciated the straightforward candor. I’m glad I chose his shop to do this for me. Highly recommended.

Ezra is a sweetheart!
One evening I was riding home from a sour experience at another bike shop when I passed Green Machine and stopped by for the first time. It was 6:45pm and the facility closed at 7pm. Ezra came out to greet me and I informed him that I was looking to buy a helmet. I asked if it was too late and if I should come back another time, and he said he had 2 flats to fix but if I stuck around that he'd be happy to assist me.
When Ezra came back outside, he was very patient and informative as I have never bought a cycling helmet as an adult and am unfamiliar with the new technologies

If there was a no star I would give that! The guy who answered the phone and door was so rude and disgusting and disrespectful! Was gonna purchase something I seen from a stranger and asked where he got a child seat from but I rather invested my money else where the customer service is appreciated.

I don't write reviews too often but this guy deserves a 6 out of 5. Ezra is I one man show right now during these weird COVID-19 times. I dropped off my bike and he had it up and running in no time. The rates were beyond reasonable and he was very nice during the whole process. I think once things get back to normal, I will go in and buy a brand new bike from him. I have NO problem spending my money at such a great operation. Thanks Ezra.

We brought our vintage tandem to Green Machine. We needed brake service and advice. We wanted to keep ourselves safe and keep our treasured two-seater on the road. The folks at Green Machine understood. They wanted to be certain that the bike was safe to ride. They communicated clearly so we knew exactly what work needed to be done and why. Their work was top-notch. They're friendly and credible. If you've dealt with big bike shops that want to sell you everything from A-Z irrespective of what you actually need, then stop by this neighborhood shop. You'll be glad you did.

Long overdue review here. I've been going to Green Machine for a few years now, first for basic maintenance and accessories for my Soma bike and earlier this year with my kiddo to buy a cargo bike. Ezra was super helpful with advice on our different options, was happy to let us test-ride all the cargo bikes in the store, and then to customize the Xtracycle we ended up purchasing.

Green Machine has a great selection of high-quality bikes and accessories for city cyclists, both adults and kids. I've bought great helmets, bags, and other necessities there for fair prices, and everyone I

The people here are the absolute NICEST and incredible pros. Fixed my blown out tire in 20 minutes at a very reasonable price. If you're looking to support a local bike shop and get great service, this is 100% the place.

I only put this as 2 star so more people would read it. I moved to Portland a year ago & just tried to get my bike put together again after a year off of cycling. I was riding a new scooter around a new city. I was very excited to have my baby back, HOWEVER, when my bike was shipped or before I brought it to the The Green Machine, there was a crack in my frame, making it unrideable. The Green Machine either cracked my bike frame or failed to tell me what these experienced Portland bike mechanics said was a, "very noticeable, easy to spot crack". The Green Machine took my money and

This is my neighborhood shop and they are great. I have only used them for service and accessories. They have a limited number of new bikes and they specialize in urban commuting solutions. They are knowledgeable and thoughtful with their advice. Most recently, I needed a full tune up before a 100 mile ride and they were quick to get it done and it rode like it was new. Ezra was who I worked with. They are a bit crusty and opinionated, but I like that.

My bike was shifting poorly and causing me to feel unsafe. I brought my bike in and spoke with Ezra. He said, they would take a look at it as well as take a test ride and give me a call. Ezra called me the next day and explained what was wrong and gave me options. I needed a special part that would need to be ordered. Ezra explained to me that it wasn't on the normal order days for the store, however he could order it if I wanted to pay for the shipping(which he also gave me an estimated cost). I commute to work most days and wanted my bike up and running ASAP so I agreed to the repairs and shipping

This place was recommended to me by an avid biker friend of mine. I only ride my bike to and from work, and occasionally on a bike path.
I brought my bike in because my bottom bracket had started to sound bad. I figured that while I was here, I would have the rest of my bike checked out.
The guy who met me at the door got the story (clunking sound in the pedals, bad front brake, please look at everything). He took the bike to the back area and it got looked at by the next person.
Here I was told that my front brake line may need replacing and i could use a general tune up. Otherwise my bike looks

I decided to try them out to have my two juvenile bikes and my wife's bike tuned up for the season. They were able to have the bikes ready in the expected timeframe without any issues. They even were able to find hard to find bike parts for my kids' bikes that are not normally carried at other shops (think pink streamers and pink handle bar grips).

Only good words! Very down to earth and friendly Ezra and his shop. I especially appreciate that at this place they will never compromise over quality of the repairs.
Also they are simply good people - they support local non for profit bike collective The Recyclery.
Please, support them back!

I am a rather new customer -- but quickly became a loyal one to Green Machine Cycles. Not only do Ezra and Chris love what they do - their knowledge of all things bikes (especially cargo bikes - their specialty), is vast. They truly take the time to learn what your needs are and that they are met. You will enjoy the experience of shopping for your bike needs and potentially learn something new from these two. I highly recommend this very friendly and welcoming shop. Check it out; you will NOT regret it !!

I have been in Ezra's shop a few times since it opened. Stellar mechanic! And great customer service. My son who has some cognitive challenges, needed some immediate assistance but I was not able to get to the shop with him. I called in the situation over the phone and explained that my son would be coming in with his bike. Ezra assured me he would take care of it. He did. And he promptly called me back afterwards. My son felt welcomed and his bike was fixed efficiently and promptly.
You can tell the shop is new; product is still coming in, bikes still being built. But already Ezra has a solid
