Carroll Veterinary Clinic was founded in 1984 by Dr. H. G. Mark Strauss, a veterinarian who fell in love with the local community, its pets, and pet owners. Two years later, Dr. Strauss was joined by Dr. Jim Adams, a DVM who shared his passion for the area and for caring for animals.
Together, the two veterinarians started Foothills Pet Healthcare Clinic in 1999 to expand their practice and bring their solutions-oriented care to pets and pet owners in the Mount Airy region.Since then, the practices have grown to include two additional DVMs, Dr. Jonathan Adcock and Dr. Teresa McKenzie.

Carroll Veterinary Clinic is designed to provide a full scope of veterinary services and pet boarding services to accommodate dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and pocket pets. Our newly constructed facilities feature comfortable and spacious surroundings, well-equipped in-house labs, radiology suites for diagnostic work, and full-service pet boarding facilities.
Although born and raised in North Carolina, Dr. Jim Adams spent long childhood summers on his grandparents' small farm in rural southwest Virginia. It was there that he was first inspired by the natural rhythms and work ethics of farm life. The community's veterinarian was held in high esteem and the locals consulted him on everything from when to breed the cows, to local political questions, to how to fund their children's college educations.
For most of us, our first exposure to animals is through a dog. Canine pets are important members of the family and they occupy a special place in each family member's heart. At Carroll Veterinary Clinic and Foothills Pet Healthcare, all four of our veterinarians live with multiple dogs, many of which have been rescued.
