Cartier Optical was started in Old Saybrook on the corner of Main Street and Route 1 by Ernest Cartier Sr. in 1972.

Cartier Optical Inc. works with most insurance providers. We accept all major credit cards and check or cash payments as well. We can also contact the insurance carrier to help you understand exactly what is covered.
In addition to our eyeglasses and sunglasses, we also prescribe, fit, and sell contact lenses. We feature colored contact lenses, bifocal contact lenses, contact lenses for astigmatism, contacts for nearsightedness, contacts for farsightedness, as well as both hard and soft contact lenses. If you need a contact lens fitting, we can do that with a current eye exam, Less than a year old.

I was quoted a maximum charge of $56 for an examination by David MacDonald. When I received the bill it was for $203. When I called there was no effort made to modify or adjust. I was smugly told essentially “so what”. It is not major money but the attitude of David MacDonald was off putting and when an agreement is made it should mean something. I likely would not have agreed to the exam for $203. Not an honorable way to do business.

We needed to get an eye exam for my father in a hurry and they were able to accommodate him within days. Dr. MacDonald was very professional and reassuring to my father during the exam. The staff at Cartier was extremely professional and kind during our visit. Overall an extremely positive experience and would recommend them highly.

Finally, a family-owned business that caters to your needs! I can't speak highly about the experiences I've had in this business. When you walk in the store, you'll soon understand the knowledge and success of a business that's been open since the 1970's. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. Any product issues are handled extremely well - excellent customer service. I won't go anywhere else for eye wear. If you are sick of the chain/big-box experience and want a more personal touch, Cartier Optical is the place to go.

I have been getting my glasses here since 1981 and recommend them highly. When special lenses with prisms were needed for family members, the prescribing doctor was surprised at Cartier's accuracy - their usual experience was having to send the glasses back a few times to the optician until they got it right. I had previously gone to another optician in Old Saybrook and had very bad service. Cartier is also excellent at telling you which frames look good on your face, and it has nothing to do with price. They will recommend a cheaper frame if it is the right one for you. Another thing I feel is
