David Himmelman opened the Cross Country Ski Chalet in November of 1972, where his son Paul worked part-time while going to high school. In the spring of 1973, the 'Ski Chalet' started carrying Gitane bicycles and the company name was changed to Cross Country Ski Chalet/Now Bikes.

In the winter of 1976, after two years of studying philosophy at the University of Minnesota, Paul left school, worked out a purchase agreement with his father and took over operations of the business. In 1978, Bob Sumada (a friend of Paul's since 2nd grade and his college roommate) joined the business.
Our bikes have always been about amplifying fun, so our goal for the Heckler MX was to make something light and agile that can help you on-site blind terrain. A mixed-wheel bike gives the confidence of a 29-inch wheel up front for traction and roll-over when you're caught off guard by technical features.
For "fun on one, " look to Sun's Classic Unicycle. The steel frame sports a classic unicrown design and is built for excellent strength and reliability. Plus, the wheel spins on sealed bearings for durability, while the quick-release seatpost makes seat adjustments a snap. And speaking of seats, the Classic's offers top-notch comfort, balance, and bumpers to protect it, too.
The concave shape and tall pins of the Thump composite pedal provides a "just-right" amount of traction-enough for the rigors of riding off-road-but with nylon pins to keep calves laceration-free on more casual rides. Two different platform sizes accommodate feet from small to Sasquatch. The Trail platform disperses pressure on your foot and provides a little extra confidence when descending unclipped.
When you want to make a colorful statement, reach for the Men's Chrono Expert Jersey. Made with a stretch polyester, this jersey will keep you feeling comfortable on any ride you choose. The lightweight fabric is up to the challenge of long days in the saddle in warmer temperatures while the raglan sleeves provide freedom to move.

It's getting harder to find a small bike shop that isn't generally condescending towards someone who isn't a regular or otherwise "in" with them, or doesn't have staff that act like they're God's gift to this world and you're wasting their heaven-sent time. I think NOW is one of the rare finds that isn't like that. The techs were great - no nonsense, friendly, and did exactly what I needed without trying to sell me something else. Kudos to them for doing a headset installation on the spot since they weren't busy at the moment - most other places would have told me to wait at least a few days, while

I had a fairly poor experience getting a bike fit here. It wasn’t very educational and the person was fairly quiet and non-engaging in trying to assist in helping me understand how to get a more proper fit. I get that everyone’s fit is unique, but for the cost I would expect the service to try to understand some basics of your riding with some questioning and educational understanding. It was essentially me sitting on a automatic bike fitter saying “better or worse” than the previous position. If you’re looking for more interactive and involved bike fittings that are tethered to your

A great experience at Now Bikes & Fitness. They helped recommend a great mountain bike within my price range and with more features than I was expecting. Put it together, and spent time with me on the day of purchase to size it correctly, explain the bike, and answer all my questions. I had a great time from start to finish and highly recommend this bike shop for their knowledge and friendliness. Can't wait to ride this summer!

I brought my running style stroller in and they were able to repair the spoke in the front wheel, saving me money on a new stroller! They were helpful and didn’t seem to mind my strange request. Thanks!

Having just moved to St Paul from Chicago, I didn't have any experience with local cycling shops. I had just pulled my bike out of moving storage, and immediately blew a tire, and had some old shifter issues as well. Looking for the closest shop, I called NOW, and brought in the bike. They were quite busy - it is the middle of summer and prime riding season - but I talked with the tech who said he'd do his best to check it out, but no promises for super quick completion time. So I was shocked when I received a call just 2 hours later that the bike was ready to roll - the tube replaced

Wow! Had such a great time purchasing my new E-bike over the weekend. Bob and Mike were super helpful and friendly. I am not a sophisticated biker and these guys still took the time to ensure I got the bike that was right for me. I feel like a kid again being able to ride long distances. I highly recommend Now Bikes and E-bikes for those of us who are over 65....

My roommate and I had been looking for bikes to ride on local bike trails, for casual recreation and to add a different activity to exercise options. I was reluctant to shop in any bike store because I am obese, and in my experience, people in any sort of fitness business seem to think that fat people don't exercise. I have run into so many condescending attitudes, and I was anxious about running into it again while bike shopping.

We walked into Now and were immediately greeted by a friendly young man, who did not so much as bat an eye that this fat, old woman was looking for a bike. He immediately

What do you need from a bike store? A great selection of bikes, solid expertise, a convenient location and a history in the community. I give the folks at NOW four stars because they have all of these things down solid. These folks live bikes and love bikes and have been doing this for decades.

I felt the need to leave a review because I read some of the mean-spirited comments written by some other reviewers who clearly are sensitive and need their bike shop employees to have 37 pieces of flair. (I also thought it was tacky to call out individual employees by name--especially when they are good

Big thanks to Rich, Bob, Doug and Ambrose. These nice folks saved our cross country bike ride (Ride for Rare Diseases!) After a bad crash we needed a specific derailleur and they got it ASAP! And the sour beer just made it that much better. I highly recommend this shop...bike and accessory selection was second to none. The Service Department was cleanest I have ever seen and the tech are super nice! Great shop!

This shop is Excellent. There is a reason I drive from Minneapolis to STP for anything bike related. It is because the mechanics are very knowledgeable and thorough. The team at the front of the store knows about everything from nutrition, to gear, and the latest bikes. If you let them, this shop will be your second family.

I've had major service done on two different bikes by Sam Sam (mechanic with a shiny dome). Impeccable work. Especially loving the Cervelo R5 build he did for me. I've enjoyed their other staff as well.

Did the Tuesday evening cycling classes at NOW over the fall and winter. Really nice to use the Wahoo trainers and have some motivation to work hard while training indoors. Have had nothing but positive experiences here - nice array of bikes and professional staff.

No matter where you are or what you are doing at this very moment, know that the staff members at this store , somehow already hate you and the only way to make them hate you even more, apparently is to buy somethings like a bicycle, a pair of shoes and clip-less pedals from their store. So do them the great favor of buying those things from someone else. They will probably charge you less too.

Real talk though, beginner or not, but for sure if you are just starting to take cycling seriously. These people will make you feel very unwelcome. Just do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. You

Super condescending. Went in for tubes and degreaser so I can work on my gf's bike. I asked the employee at the register where to find these items. Instead of answering my question he responded by asking why I needed them (you have to ask?), and followed up with "Let me teach you something." Never got that answer I was looking for.

I've worked in a bike shop as a mechanic/salesman, and I'm an avid road cyclist. I bit my tongue to let him "teach me something" about basic bicycle maintenance. I can appreciate an employee who is helpful and knowledgeable, but I

Best shops in town. Very attentive. Have purchased 2 racing bikes for my son, 1 mountain, 1 road. Worked with us for hours getting the right one. Then spent about 2 hours tweaking the bike for the correct position. Have never had that at any bike shop. Just bought the road bike they said bring it in the spring to do the set up, as he is still growing. Everyone is very friendly and they don't make you feel unwelcome or unworthy of their bikes.

They lost me as a customer even before I ever purchased anything. Why? The severely condescending way that they've spoken to me all 3 times I've been there by several employees. All but one was nasty. The one nice, decent person was a female worker. Every time I was spoken to like I have no idea what a "bi-sick-call" is. Mind you I am an avid road cyclist with multiple bikes, I follow professional cycling religiously and I'm very up to date on all the gear trends. So the last straw for me was when I went in for the simplest task of asking about a tuneup for my nicest bike

Great service! I paid for it, but well worthwhile. Spent about $6K on a Cervelo....great Canadian ride for a dual U.S./Canadian citizen. Rode it this past weekend...yes I took it off the trainer... and wow what a ride. Bob did a great fitting, but his sales and tech guys were the bomb. I know you're an owner Bob, and you deserve credit for the GREAT fit....and it is a GREAT fit....but as a business owner, I have to give serious shout-outs to your salesperson (B...) and your tech guy (shaved head and awesome!). I will spend all my biking money at this shop. Quality goods and, most importantly

I have had consistently excellent experiences at NOW Bikes in St. Paul (on Snelling Ave) over the past several years. They sold me both of my bikes (the first one unfortunately was stolen) and have done many tune-ups and small repairs/tire change outs/etc over the years. The bike maintenance/repair guys are superb--they always treat me well and are super respectful, even though I'm not a super high-end biker. I've chosen to buy things in-store (versus online), even though the online prices are cheaper, because I value the personal service here and respect their opinions. I wouldn&apos

Dishonest people there. Purchased a defective bike lock and they said I never got it there, until I returned with a receipt. Never going back. Also overpriced. Purchased a bike bag there and found the exact same one (Banjo Bros) at Boehm's a block away $10 cheaper.. Difference was Now had to have their logo on it. Stay away.

I'm compelled to write my first review because my experience at Now was so unusually positive. I was hit on all fronts with expertise--two amazing sales staff and an amazing repair staff in the back of the shop (ask for Sam, he's wicked smahrt).

I usually try and spread my dollars across this town's great independent bike shops, but this now I'm afraid it will be hard to go anywhere else.

Soo knowledgeable, genuinely helpful, and pretty chill place. Rich makes shopping for bikes, for a very short person with a long torso, fun! That's saying a lot considering I've been to quite a few bike shops around town with no results.

Similar to what Jenny C said, the staff here deals with a lot of cyclists, so they'll throw out terms that may go over your head. No worries, let them know, and they'll go easy on you and won't talk down to you.

The one very unique and pretty cool thing about Now would be the dynamic fit bike. It's a machine and process that

Recently, I dropped into this shop in order to help a friend purchase a new bike. Additionally, I was interested in being properly "fit" on a bike I had purchased online a few years before.

Upon entering, we were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. Before we knew it, both of us were being "fit" for our next bike purchases. The entire experience was friendly and professional.

In summary, my experience with NOW was great. I would highly recommend a visit if in the market for a tune-up, a fitting or a new bike purchase.
