We are an independent bike shop located in downtown Saint Peter, Minnesota. We sell Jamis bikes and we work on just about everything from garage sale finds to the bikes worth more than our family's car. We founded our shop in 2018 in Saint Paul. We had a good run there but with the arrival of our twin girls, we realized that we needed to be closer to our families.
So this fall The Smallest Cog v2.0 will launch in Saint Peter. And in our new location we will pick up where we left off on our mission: 1) we want to be a great bike shop; and 2) we want to ensure that everyone has good places to ride. That's our niche, that's our hook, that's our business plan. We look forward to meeting you this fall when we open our doors.

Services
Our dream to be The Smallest Cog started in 2015 with a successful Ok Cupid date in Washington DC. Mark (Mechanic/Owner) - grew up in Mankato and became a bike commuter at age 10 when he started riding to Hoover Elementary School. He almost lost his way at age 16 when he got his license, but he quickly returned to the righteous path of his bikes being worth more than his cars.
We want you to be happy with the services you receive and the products you purchase from us. By the time we ring up the sale we will have discussed the product and whether it will serve your needs. We will pursue warranty claims on your behalf for any defective product purchased at our shop;. We will accept returns of product provided it is in its original packaging and it has not been used;.
These are resources our mechanics frequently consult. Compatibility is the theme and compatibility - not always, but often - is the root of the most mysterious bike aliments. We see this one a lot. Consumers may not know this, but shops should: don't fit a narrow tire to a wide rim. For example, if the rim measure 19 mm bead to bead, then don't mount a 23 mm tire.

My husband and I had a babysitter and were ready for our date day. We were about to hit the trail and my husband's chain snapped. Called the smallest cog and they said they could help. Brought the bike in and in 15 minutes it was fixed and we were able to hit the trail. Super helpful friendly serivice. We got a new chain, the repair, and a bike lock for $50. Highly recommend!

I had recently bought a used bike that needed a tune up. I brought the bike to Mark and they did an excellent job! They have been super helpful and helped me with getting the gear for a proper fit. They have earned themselves a loyal customer and I would recommend his shop to anyone.

This bike shop is our new favorite! Their skilled mechanic squeezed my bike fix in less than 24 hours even though he was booked out for 2 weeks. My bike is in better condition than ever. Trust worthy. Absolutely reasonable pricing. Also fixed the previous poor jobs that Lowertown bike shop did. As long as we live in St Paul ,we will always be coming back here for our bike care. Thank you Smallest Cog Bicycle Shop!

I had a few minor issues with my bike that could have become major ones. The owner was very responsive and was able to get my bike in for a quick look. He went through several things, found several instances of sloppy work by another shop I shall not name, and corrected it all. That he did it quickly and fairly priced is nice. He also shared some knowledge with me about further preventive measures I can take, should my issues return or persist.
He's got a new customer with tuneups and repairs. I recommend.
Add/edit: I'll add that Mark is highly transparent about the work he does and has made

Brought my 2014 Trek Domane 4.3 to Mark for an overhaul a few weeks ago - I needed a new rear wheel and a derailleur hanger replaced, among some other things. More than just a quick tune-up, let's put it that way! Mark was super about communicating, letting me know what he'd found, and making recommendations for parts that were in line with what my expectations were - both in terms of performance and cost.
I had my bike back about a week after I dropped it off. I've put about 100 miles on it since getting it back four days ago and I can honestly say that in the four years I've owned it, this bike

I was randomly biking through downtown St. Paul when I noticed the shop. My kickstand had come loose and I was without a portable tool. I stopped by and Mark was immediately friendly and welcoming. He tightened my kickstand and we started chatting. He really knows his stuff and is extremely friendly. I always go out of my way to support local business and will definitely be back for all bike repairs and parts orders. He also stocks some good bikes. Check out the shop and keep your money local! It's good for STP and good for your karma

Mark is a versatile mechanic that works to understand and meet the needs of each rider. He's also thoughtful and strategic about advancing the role bikes, biking and cyclists have in making our world a better place. Great community bike shop with quality service at a fair price.

Brought my bike in for a check up after moving. Mark took a quick look at my bike, adjusted the derailleur, replaced a missing part, and replaced my front brake pads, all while making friendly conversation.
Great & quick service, friendly owner, reasonable prices . All in all a fantastic neighborhood bike shop.

Super nice bike guy in newly established shop. I just happened by it and knowing I needed a tune up and actually because I wanted it fairly quickly (look at this weather!) I brought my bike in. Turns out my hunch was right. Got the bike back quickly with great explanations as to what was done, and what was needed. Priced fairly. Friendly. Knows what he is doing. (Sweet, shy, shop-dog a plus!) Check it out.
