Irwin's Neighborhood Bakery and Cafe opened its doors in 2000, occupying the same space that's been a family-owned business serving the Wallingford neighborhood since 1923. Originally Irwin's Grocery and Market, the Irwin's legacy continued with the great-granddaughter of the original Irwin, Pastry Chef Shannon Mattila, who opened Irwin's as a Bakery and Cafe in 2000 and is the creative force behind the pastry recipes still used today at Irwin's.
Baker/Entrepreneur Linda Fecher bought Irwin's in 2006. Irwin's had become Linda's family's local coffee shop, and here Linda became friends with Shannon, eventually becoming involved with the running of the business. When Linda learned that Shannon was considering selling the Bakery/Cafe, she jumped at the chance.

Services
Choose from Plain, Sesame, Everything, Multigrain, Asiago, or Jalapeno & Jack made by Blazing Bagels. Toasted in-house with oats, almonds, pecans, seeds, apple juice, craisins and brown sugar. Comes with your choice of milk. All sandwiches are handmade with Wild Wheat Bakery's Swiss Peasant Bread and grilled panini style.
Linda began her career in the restaurant industry on the other side of the counter, waiting tables at a busy local restaurant. A full-time mom with a business degree and a fanatical home-baker, Linda had been trying on different "hats" in her quest for the truly satisfying career. Waiting tables marked a turning point for Linda; it was here she discovered she had a knack, and a love, for hospitality.

Decent space. Food service was quick, the team seems well managed, etc. Food was good, not over the top with any condiments. Attenders and manager were decent during my visit.
Cons:
Bathroom bin was broken, low on paper, not the cleanest when I was there. People do not seem to understand how important a bathroom is to a space. They should do better to make sure it is spotless.
Some woman sitting at a table without her mask, was sneezing and coughing up a storm. It was unnerving. Also, no vaccination check was asked for. Might be well to check folks out who are lobbying and unless they are eating

Not a fan. Staff was not in the mood to be friendly. I prefer a larger selection of healthy options for meals. It would be helpful to have calories and fat information listed by each item. They could not omit mayonnaise from sandwiches because they said they make them up ahead of time. They are a niche business and cannot possibly please everyone so I do not feel put out at all. It’s in a nice neighborhood with many beautiful flowers up and down the streets. Outdoor seating is available including a more secluded one towards the back of the building.
