Woodstock Aikido was founded in 1986 at its present location on Upper Byrdcliffe Road in Woodstock. Members of the initial group were previous members of a dojo in Saugerties started by Lou Kleinsmith; a dojo that did not last after Lou's passing from illness. Fortunately, Harvey Konigsberg had purchased a "retreat" house in Woodstock, and he became a member of the group, all training together as equals.
Over time, though, it became clear that Konigsberg Sensei's level of Aikido mandated that he become Head of Instruction, or Chief Instructor. Over the years the dojo was renovated and improved by members, and it grew organically, becoming one of the leading dojos on the East Coast, despite the small size of our local population.

The kids' class at Woodstock Aikido has traditionally been a big part of our family-oriented dojo. Many kids who trained here are now adults, all grown up. The Aikido principles of balance, being grounded and moving from the center helped many when they did other challenging physical activities and sports like soccer, baseball and skiing.
Etiquette is the heart and spirit of Aikido practice. Being aware is the core principle of etiquette. In a real life situation, being unaware could easily result in simple embarrassment, to serious injury, or even death. Following proper etiquette keeps you safe from injury while training. It is your responsibility as a student to cooperate in creating an atmosphere of harmony by respecting O-Sensei's teachings.
Woodstock Aikido is affiliated with the US Aikido Federation (USAF), through which our ranks are certified with Hombu Dojo, the Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The USAF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to spreading and maintaining the Japanese martial art of Aikido as created and exemplified by its founder, Morihei Ueshiba.

The mothership of all Aikido dojos in the Upper Hudson Valley! I have been practicing at Woodstock Aikido since 1997. Excellent dojo, beautiful setting, fabulous instructors, an enjoyable experience all around. We are very fortunate in our small town to have Konigsberg-Sensei, one of the highest ranking Americans in this martial art, as our Chief Instructor.
