Services
Our clinic has been serving the Madison community since 1968. As an independent clinic, we focus on maximizing client service while maintaining the highest standards for our clinicians. How do we do it? We work together with warmth and respect-just the way we treat our clients. Patients are our first priority, but don't be surprised to see your clinician somewhere else.
We review our mission statement every few years, but the theme never changes: Psychiatric Services provides the highest quality of comprehensive mental health services. We are a community of experienced and respected professionals who provide individualized outpatient treatment to promote mental health and wellness across the lifespan.
It all started in 1967. A small number of psychiatrists and psychologists joined together to practice in an informal group. Their bond was friendship, as well as respect for each other's skills. The relationship was formalized with the creation of Psychiatric Services, S.C. Over the years, new clincians have been added to meet more diverse and expanding needs.
Though individual therapists may have specialized training, most of our therapists use an approach that combines several types of treatment. They identify your goals and needs, and then tailor an approach that suits you. Traditional therapy can be focused on stress management and problem-solving. Specialized therapy may include interpersonal therapy to help you understand how your interactions with others affect your sense of well-being.
Psychiatrists specialize in mental health and can prescribe medication as part of your treatment. Psychiatrists also provide consultation and evaluation to clarify your mental health needs. Several of our psychiatrists also provide therapy or 'counseling' that focuses on helping you address your mental health problems through talking and problem-solving.

I was surprised to see a couple of negative reviews - I don't typically write reviews, but wanted to offer my experience -- we've seen Dr. Ken Herrmann for several years and find him (and PSSC) to be outstanding. I've recommended several of the providers, mostly Dr. Singer, Dr. Herrmann and Dr. Rickman to my friends. Dr. Herrmann really knows my son, and asks thoughtful questions. My kid has never done so well with anyone else. The front desk staff are more business-like than friendly, but that's OK with me as I'm happy to get in and out quickly!

This place is acceptable for mental health treatment. The positives: Reception is fantastic. They are always helpful, responsive, prompt, and flexible with scheduling changes. They worked with me to get a prescription refilled at the last minute and I can't thank them enough. Dan Levin is a wonderful psychologist who helped me through some major life changes. He was always patient and kind even when I called after hours. I recommend him to anyone looking for a good therapist - he truly cares about his patients.
The psychiatrists are another story. They tend not to be good listeners and invalidate

Intake process was completely disrespectful. I filled out a detailed form requesting a new patient consult and their only response was to leave a rude voicemail stating that they weren’t accepting any more patients with my insurance. Despite offering to pay out of pocket, they ghosted me and refused to answer basic questions or refer me elsewhere.

It is impossible to speak with medical providers.
No one is friendly. You're treated like a burden.
The psychiatrists are consistently terrible, as you can see from the reviews. Not working with you to get a refill on your prescription? Not documenting medication that you've been on for over two months? HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?
What a terrible clinic. I can't think of one good thing about it.

My experience at Psychiatric Services was awful.
The receptionists are extremely rude and act like answering any questions or scheduling appointments is a burden on them. Once I was able to get through the unpleasant intake process, I was given an appointment with Amy Miller, who was recommended by Alexandra McMurry (more on this below).
Amy Miller was curt, rude, and uninterested in actually talking to me about the issues I was seeing her for. When I went into my first appointment with her, it was clear that Dr. Miller basically filled out a generic mental health questionnaire as she rapidly

At first I had good experiences, but it went downhill from there.
NOTICE: DR. STEPHEN SINGER DOES NOT PROPERLY DOCUMENT THE MEDICATIONS HIS PATIENTS TAKE. This lead to him prescribing me the wrong medication and me paying $120 for it!!!!
My doctor was Dr. Stephen Singer. I was seeing him for my mental health illness. I went in to his office at the beginning of February and he supposedly refilled my prescription that I've been on for AT LEAST 2 months at the time.... At least that's what I thought. Turns out, instead of refilling the med that I have been taking, he gave me a completely different

Had wonderful experiences with LSCW K. Esbensen. She is a wonderful woman whose words of confidence I will remember for a long time. The couple times that I had saw her, she was pleasant and kind. Helped me a lot. I would recommend her to anyone with Anxiety and Depression. Through no fault of her own, I had missed some appointments and been charged. Payed and I understood completely. Almost a year later I had an unfortunate thing happened to me and was hoping to see her again. When I called to make an appointment, I was told I was canceled from her service and can never have her as a therapist

Amy Miller is the WORST healthcare professional I have ever seen in my life. DO NOT GO THERE. I went to see her about a month and a half ago and she switched my medication that my primary care doctor prescribed for anxiety and depression. My first refill was for 15 days with no refills. Second refill for 15 days NO REFILLS. A total of 6 weeks later she REFUSED to refill my meds because I can’t make a follow up appointment right now due to a family emergency situation going on and I physically cannot come in right now. But she was quick to tell me I can pay her $80 for a FIVE MINUTE phone call

Called as a new patient seeking a new therapist. A woman called back and curtly told me they aren't accepting new patients and that no one accepts my health insurance provider ( United healthcare ). Didn't ask if I'd like to be put on a waiting list, or if I could pay for services out of pocket ( which I can ) .
Seemed like I was an inconvenience at best and an idiot at worst as far as she was concerned.
No wonder few people actively seek out mental health services.
