Center Island Aikido is a non-profit organization affiliated with the United States Aikido Federation, and offers training in the Ueshiba style of Aikido and Yang style T'ai Chi (short form). Our schedule offers morning and evening classes most days of the week. No appointments are necessary to come observe a class, and our nonprofit status means that dues are very affordable.
Services
The close-quarters nature of Aikido practice is incompatible with preventive measures that include social distancing. Therefore, this organization's board members have made the difficult decision to suspend classes indefinitely. Aikido is a dynamic martial art and, among many other principles, teaches us to accept and adapt to changing situations.
Ed began the practice of Aikido in 1972 at the New York Aikikai, under the supervision of Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan. Ed is a charter member of the Suffolk Institute for Eastern Studies (SIES), having been practicing with Howard Pashenz Sensei when he founded the SIES over twenty-five years ago. Ed was attracted to Aikido because of its philosophy.
Chief Instructor and President of the Board of Directors of The Suffolk Institute For Eastern Studies D/B/A Center Island Aikido, a Not For Profit Corporation. Rich fell head over heels with Aikido in 1994. Prior to that he trained for 20 years in Shorin Ryu Okinawan Karate (hard style). He combined his Aikido training with Rinzai Zen Meditation and has been studying under Edgar Genshin Kann, a student of Joshu Sasaki Roshi.
Mr. Tohei went to Hawaii in 1953. On his return, he brought back a leather coat which was impossible to obtain at that time in Japan. It had fringes like the ones you see in western movies. He had a leather coat when it was impossible even to obtain leather shoes! I really thought it was amazing. Then, that coat was skillfully stolen.

Center Island Aikido is BY FAR the best value for Aikido instruction on Long Island. Monthly fees are very low, and members may attend as many classes as they wish. The dojo is well-lit, clean and spacious, with wall-to-wall high-quality tatami mats on the floor.
All instructors are volunteers (which helps keep the fees low), and most have been with the organization for many years. They are very dedicated to the study of Aikido. Many started out in different martial arts backgrounds and bring diverse and valuable perspectives to their Aikido instruction. A student who attends different classes
