Services
At that time, there were 28 psychiatrists across North Carolina, with the great majority of them practicing in either private or public hospitals. The NCNPA's first petition to become a District Branch within the APA was rejected in 1955 based on differences between the two organizations' membership criteria.
NCPA's leadership is elected by the membership each year. Terms generally run from May to April, annually and begin on the last day of the APA's Annual Meeting, when the national leadership is sworn in. The NC Psychiatric Association is comprised of many committees, both constitutional and standing committees.
To enhance the quality of assistance to the psychiatric patient, particularly by improving access to care, improving conditions in hospitals, mental health centers and other facilities, and changing perceptions of mental illness and the process of recovery. To remove any discrimination against people with mental illness, which may inhibit or prevent proper care, through educational and public service activities.
The V. Sagar Sethi, M.D. Mental Health Research Award was created with an endowment from the late Dr. Sethi, a longtime psychiatrist in Charlotte and member of the North Carolina Psychiatric Association (NCPA) and American Psychiatric Association (APA). The award seeks to "honor a scientist for significant contributions to basic research in the neurosciences, psychology, or pharmacology at a molecular, cellular or behavioral level."
The NC Psychiatric Association is a non-partisan organization that works to represent and advance the practice of medicine and psychiatry in North Carolina through the policy-making and legislative process.
