Our association was established in 1935 to provide a forum for the exchange of original, practical and medical information. This year marks the 80th anniversary of "the Southern." When you join, you are be part of an organization dedicated to furthering the knowledge of the causes, treatment, and prevention of psychiatric disorders and advancing the standards in public and private hospitals, outpatient clinics and all other agencies concerned with the medical social, and legal aspects of mental disorders.
Services
Presently, membership is limited to 300 due-paying members. SPA feels that by keeping the membership low, the collegial interaction among the psychiatrist members is greatly enhanced. SPA takes pride in the active involvement and Annual Meeting participation by psychiatrist members who continually year after year support their Association.
The Southern Psychiatric Association offers an annual award for a manuscript concerning basic or clinical research, or a scholarly review of literature, on a topic pertinent to psychiatry. The manuscript must be submitted by a resident in the United States. Assistance in Submitting Paper for Publication in an appropriate medical journal if needed.
We are anticipating an attendance of 70-90 physicians. SPA's membership includes about 200 psychiatrists from around the country.
Its purpose is to provide quality continuing medical education for physicians in the specialty of psychiatric medicine and to foster the study of the cause, treatment and prevention of mental illness and promote improvements in the standards of medical care and treatment for psychiatric disorders and further research and education in psychiatric medicine.
