In the early 1920's, Harry Cohen moved from the Bronx with his family to Ellenville, NY, and opened Cohen's Quality Bakery. Beginning on Canal Street in Ellenville, Cohen's then moved to Center Street, and finally ended up in the red brick building at 89 Center Street. Upon Harry's passing, his son, Willie, along with his youngest brother, Ruby, took over the operation and management of their father's legacy.
In 1966 Willie suddenly passed away, leaving the business to Ruby, who was the sole proprietor of the bakery. For more than 45 years, Ruby upheld the level of excellence established by his father so many years ago. In 2003, due to Ruby's failing health, Bill Tochterman and Fouad Kerendian purchased the "Cohen's Bakery" name, business, and the time-honored Cohen recipes.

I had heard about this notable bakery from friends in the area, so I had to try it out. Sure enough, after driving at least 30 minutes out of my way to get there, they were sold out of the famous raisin pumpernickel loaves by lunchtime! (Note to self: next time, call ahead.) But they had a walnut raisin pumpernickel loaf, and quite frankly, I think I like that just as much as the pure raisin. These breads are very dark, with a appropriately dense, moist crumb. The raisins and walnuts were there in a generous amount; I wouldn't have wanted more. There's a sweetness to the raisins, but

This was a random stop on a road trip and we were so pleased to have found it. Seating is available indoors or outdoors - we sat outside on a lovely day. You can also order bread and pastries in the bakery if you're not in the mood for a sit-down meal. The menu says it's the home of the famous raisin-pumpernickel bread so obviously I had to try it - very good! I actually wish I'd gotten a loaf to go. I had a really great omelet, and my boyfriend had a really great reuben. Really happy we stumbled upon this place!

OMG the bread, the pastries, the everything they make at this bakery is positively delicious. The challah and rye breads are my favorite but can't pick a favorite of the cakes. Well, maybe it's the adorable chocolate mousse cake decorated to look like a mouse!!!!! Or maybe the Napoleons!!!!! LOVE this place. If I lived near Cohen's, I'd never fit into my clothes LOL

Has always been worth our trip! My hubby had a BLT and said he thought it was the best he'd ever had?! Must have been 1/4 pound of bacon!
I love the simple eggs over medium with ham, toast and crispy home fries and it's always cooked perfectly!
Hats off to this old establishment that stays true to its roots of operating an old world bakery and solidly good food restaurant.

Love coming here in the morning for breakfast. All of their baked goods are delicious. They have a courteous and friendly staff. They try to get you out as fast as possible if just ordering and leaving. They have a beautiful outside area to sit and enjoy the great food once the weather warms up. Lived in this town all my life and I have yet to find a bakery around like this one. So glad they are still in business

IM SAD TO DO THIS, but I need to take a star away because the famous raisin pumpernickel bread that I grew up with seems to have had a makeover. I couldn't wait to slice into it and present it on my Easter table. But the disappointment made me sad. This loaf just didn't rise properly and it was lacking the abundance of raisins that are one of its signatures. So I dug deep and found out that the original owners are not there anymore. The business was sold. That's dangerous because as much as they may have tried to keep things the same, some things did change.

To say that this place is great would be an understatement. Cohen's Bakery truly truly is a hidden gem. I recently moved to Ellenville and this place is my favorite. Not just do they have good service and warm cozy atmosphere but the food is awesome. I have never been disappointed by any meal here, always satisfied and happy. This wouldn't be a proper review if I didn't talk about the pastries they sold here though... OH MY GOD. I have been to many many different bakeries before, fancy expensive ones, small business owned, many in New York City and even in different parts of the

We came upon Cohen's when looking to grab a cup of coffee. The pastries all looked great and we ended up grabbing a chocolate "frozen dough" and a cherry turnover. The frozen dough seems to be a little-known pastry that looks like a flat croissant, but has the consistency of "babka meets croissant". Needless to say it was delicious, and the turnover was great as well. We actually came back the next day for another frozen dough but they were all out. We plan to be going back again to try their famous bread!

Unfortunately, everything we got was pretty stale. We got some chocolate dipped butter cookies with jam in the middle. The jam was so hard, it couldn't be bitten through and the cookie just crumbled off of it. Chocolate croissant was very soft/stale--no crunch left. We came on a Sunday so was hoping for fresher baked goods.

Tradition! I love taking the ride to Cohen's for their famous pumpernickel raisin bread. Delicious freshly baked treats and sweets shared for over a century. Great cookies and donuts too. They have added a resturant for breakfast and lunch, the portions are large, omelets and burgers are good. Friendly service.

I do really love cohens but my donuts were old and I was disappointed today. I also felt rushed when I wanted to order more baked goods and received my bagel toasted when that was not requested!!?? Cream cheese turned to water-yuk! There needs to be a more organized system when patrons walk in. People seemed confused, clustering in awkward small spaces near bakery counter. Order also took forever. I understand weekends are busy but be prepared for the influx of new and loyal returning patrons.
