Although our first vintage was in 1968, Joseph Swan Vineyards is still young at heart. The passion and curiosity that Joe Swan brought to his craft are still evident in the winery today. Located in the heart of the famed Russian River Valley, now often proclaimed ground zero for great pinot noir, we embrace the artisanal spirit that defines this amazing growing region.
The winery's roots were in old vine zinfandel and estate chardonnay and pinot noir. Today, we continue to embrace those wines but also, in recognition of the amazing quality and personality grapes grown by talented and dedicated winegrowers can achieve in this wonderful region, we have added a number of other wines to our portfolio.

The winery was named by Joe Swan when he founded it forty eight years ago. Joe came to winemaking from an unlikely background. He grew up the son of teetotaler parents (his mother was in the Women's Christian Temperance Union) in the farm country of North Dakota. He was an avid reader (there not being a whole lot else to do), and he happened to read about wine.
With over 25 different wines made each vintage, our winemaker, Rod Berglund, will make every attempt possible to insure we include an interesting cross section of all the wine we produce, including our Estate and single vineyard wines. Along with wine we bottle specifically for the wine club, we even hold back wine we think will benifit with bottle age, and include them when they are showing their best!
Food & Wine Trails is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with both Joseph Swan & Moshin Vineyards for a 8-day river cruise from Budapest to Passau. For over 50 years, Joseph Swan Vineyards has been a small family owned winery located in the heart of Sonoma County, California's famed Russian River Valley.
Looking west from the top of our tank house, the estate vineyard is mostly pinot noir with an acre of syrah. There are a few viognier vines at the end of the syrah rows and older chardonnay and cabernet vines also. A view from the south overlooking the 11 acres of the Trenton Estate Vineyard, home to the oldest vines of Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley.
This time of year I usually stock up on other wineries ross. Unfortunately ros has become the hot new in thing. Gone are the days when pink meant sweet and cloying. Today they are being made from top quality grapes and are generally dry, fun and refreshing. The bad news is that most of the ones I have been buying are made in very small quantities and generally sell out in a matter of weeks if not days.

Joseph Swan has always been and still is my favorite winery! I have bottles that they made from their estate going back to 1968! I have never had a bad bottle. I started drinking bottles from my cellar just in this century. I have enjoyed immensely every vintage of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and zinfandel that I have tasted. I always share the older vintages with friends and every taster has always been astonished at their beauty and longevity. I can't wait to share more bottles. Unfortunately,I have not opened any bottles from the last century since the beginning of the pandemic. I can wait, knowing

My favorite California winery! The folks over there are super nice, down to earth and master Craftsmen. Delicious Pinot and a wide variety of other wines like Tannat, Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer. They are a step above and reasonably priced too, given the quality of their product. They have kept craftsmanship and meticulous, thoughtful winemaking at heart, and it shows.

The tasting experience here is... okay. The trouble is, the neighbors are tripping over themselves to achieve outstanding results, and those efforts make for tough competition.
The tasting was very fast paced. No information was given on the varietals, the tasting notes, the terroir, what each vintage was like. There was no passion in the bottle, none in the glass, and none in the tasting room. For such a storied, long-tenured winery, we were surprised to find no "story", no sense of wanting to share their history or philosophy.
Maybe it was just an off day, but I'm not sure I'd venture back
