Select nerve blocks are frequently used by pain management specialists to diagnose the exact level from which the pain originates. This procedure can also decrease inflammation around the nerve, which will then remove the radicular or sciatic pain. Isolating the exact level from which the pain occurs, specific treatments can be tailored to correct the problem.
This procedure is performed to remove pain caused by facet joints in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine. These small joints are what allow the spine to flex and extend. They can become inflamed or become arthritic, producing pain with activity. Radiofrequency ablation is a painless procedure and allows the physician to burn the nerves causing a painful signal from the damaged facets.
A naturally occurring lubricating substance is injected under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance into the painful joint. This will replace the depleted synovial fluid and stimulate the cells in the joint to produce more lubricating fluid, as well as decrease inflammation. This generally provides 6-10 months of relief for arthritic joint pain.
Medtronic infusion devices are used for patients with severe intractable pain that does not respond to conventional techniques. The spinal column contains the receptors which transmit pain from the body to the brain. By placing a small catheter into the spinal fluid and connecting it to a small implantable pump, an extremely small steady infusion of pain medication can be delivered.
