The Ashland Community Preschool Board is delighted to announce our plan to fully reopen in Fall 2021. Nestled in the basement of the historic Hanover Arts & Activities Center, Ashland Community Preschool is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cooperative school run by a parent board. As part of the cooperative, member parents have the chance to witness their child's development and create those first educational memories together with their children.
As partners in our operations, each of our families plays an important role in creating a successful school. By creating a welcoming environment for both curious children and engaged parents, Ashland Community Preschool is able to create a unique community that is the one of the "Center of the Universe's" best kept secrets.

Services
Ashland Community Preschool started in the early 1970's as a playgroup where families took turns watching the children, much like a "Mom's Day Out" program. Over time, the "Community Play School" grew into an official community preschool. Today we are an organized Montessori-based cooperative preschool licensed with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In traditional teaching philosophies, a teacher instructs children and imparts knowledge upon them through lessons she has created. Students access knowledge through the teacher as they progress through the curriculum she has created. The teacher sets the learning schedule and objectives.
In contrast, a Montessori directress is the link that connects the children to the environment, only serving to gently guide students through their individual learning processes. She prepares the environment with appropriate materials, but her main objective is not to instruct the way a traditional teacher would.

One of the most unique aspects of ACP is that we are a cooperative school. A cooperative preschool, or co-op, is administered and maintained by the parent members of the school. In the classroom, parents help our professional teacher on a rotating basis, serving to participate in every child's education and growth.
In order for the classroom to be opened for the day, two working parents and one alternate (on call) working parent must be present and signed in. Working parents arrive at 8:45 a.m. and begin preparing the classroom for the day. A complete working parent checklist is posted in the classroom for parents to follow throughout the day.
Is Ashland Community Preschool affiliated with a religion? Ashland Community Preschool is not affiliated with any religion. Ashland Community Preschool admits students of any race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

We absolutely love ACP! High parent and community involvement, affordable, Montessori based with an amazing Directress. We are all family, a village, and every child is nurtured and grows individually. I love bringing younger sibling on working days and being a part of my child’s learning environment. The outdoor experience, art, music and nature inspired works, gluten free and nut free snacks, and independence of the children make this a real treasure in a small town.
