Services
Metro Karate and Jiu Jitsu Academy (MKJA) was initially established twenty-five years ago under the name Metro Karate Academy. In 2013, David Toft took over ownership of the school and altered its name to reflect the school's expanded curriculum and growing interest in different martial arts. Today, MKJA teaches Traditional Shotokan Karate and Gracie Jiu Jitsu to people from all walks of life.
MKJA prides itself on providing a relaxed and friendly environment for both our students and their families. It is our mission to help each student enhance their mental and physical strength through their training in martial arts. During your visit, you can expect to be welcomed by a group of people who are passionate about martial arts.
Whether you are interested in our programs for mental and physical well-being or Self Defense, Metro Karate & Jiu Jitsu Academy offers a number of programs that will fit your developmental needs as well as your busy schedule. Little Dragons is a program developed for children between the ages of four to thirteen years old.
Every month in the United States, three million children miss school due to fear of bullies. In the Gracie Bullyproof program, our goal is to instill in your child unshakable confidence so they can overcome bullies without violence. Due to the non-violent nature of the techniques, CNN, ABC, NBC, and Oprah have featured the Gracie Bullyproof program as one of the few effective counter-measures to bullying for children between the ages of 5 and 12.
Shotokan Karate was developed in Okinawa, a group of islands to the south of Japan. Gichin Funakoshi introduced karate to the Japanese mainland in 1922. He is the founder of Shotokan Karate. It is important that we maintain the cultural aspects of karate both in the way we train and in the way we behave when at the dojo.

I started my martial arts training almost 10 years ago and I never truly enjoyed going to karate and I didn’t really care much about it. I switched around from Many dojo’s A couple years ago the dojo that I just transferred to got sold to Mr. Toft and I got my black belt and then I took a break for about two years, deep down inside I always knew I was going to come back But it took a little longer than I expected and then when I came back I never had it more fun training at karate here with mr Toft. He makes sure that we learn karate and that we have lots of fun at the same time.

The martial arts are great - the life lessons and advice provided by Sensei Toft to kids in his classes is even better. My girls have fun, get exercise, learn karate, and gain confidence - they also have to earn what they want which is developing the strong work ethic required for life. It’s the perfect mix of fun and discipline, Mr. Toft has found his calling.

6/23 update: My daughters skills and confidence continues to grow. She loves David and the other instructors as well as the atmosphere and her classmates.
Day one my kid loved it. She’s already looking forward to her next class. David is a professional and understands how to connect with kids.

I can’t say enough great things about MKJA! Exceptional on all levels. We enrolled our 5yr (at the time) son about a year ago. We were getting weekly notes from his school that he needed to work on his listening and for talking too much. Literally the week after we started this program the notes stopped and his teacher actually told us about some occasions where he helped some other kids make better decisions and not follow along with some instigators. He’s very active in the Karate program and the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Bullyproof program. He absolutely loves both of them and sweats his butt off

We joined Metro Karate a few weeks ago and my son would take classes every single day if we had the time. He absolutely loves it. Mr. Toft and Jenna are great instructors, making sure the kids have fun but are also learning.

My family has been training here for years. I’ve tried the Jiu Jitsu Women's self defense seminars and they have been so useful. Every woman should know Jiu Jitsu! It is designed to empower the “weak” leveraging your own weight and body. This has helped my daughter’s self confidence and mine. Both of my smallest kids are in the anti-bullying program and they are in the summer camp this summer. They get home tired and happy every day. They are learning discipline, exercising, building confidence, and social skills. Take advantage of the free trials and women’s seminars when they come around

This is the place to go to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Master Dave is a great teacher and he has many blue belts that are also great instructors.

Great School! You are only as good as the people you sweat and bleed with.

I am so glad that we have found a sport that my son truly enjoys. This is the only place that my son always looks forward to going back again and again. Mr. Toft is an awesome sensei. Instructor Davante is energetic and motivating. We love this place.
