Wish we could give Alexander Mansion and the owner/host Richard, 10 stars!
The mansion itself is so beautiful and well kept. We felt comfortable from the second we arrived. The rooms are clean, comfortable and accommodating.
Richard is truly the host of anyone’s dreams. He takes pride in getting to know the guests, making the most delicious meals with the help of his staff, and making everyone feel welcomed and cared for. I have a dietary restriction, and Richard willingly made special accommodations for me so that I could enjoy each course with the table.
It’s truly the small details that

5 stars are underrated for this place! Richard is the best host you can find on Planet Earth. He will remember every guess’ name, and give you the most thorough tour of the mansion. Yes, the mansion is dead gorgeous, and I felt I travelled back to the 19th century the moment I walked in! The moment Richard served me tea with those elegant tea cups, I felt I was part of the royal family! My experience at Alexander Mansion is beyond amazing, and I will absolutely stay there again whenever I visit Winona!

We had a wonderful stay! Richard is an absolute gem. He is a host extraordinaire. From the amazing breakfast to the turn down details, he thinks of everything. We loved getting to our room in the evening to classical music, the Irish cream and chocolates. What a fun surprise. We will for sure be back!!!

Incredibly beautiful mansion and gracious host.
It’s as if the character from Gentleman in Moscow stepped out of the novel and opened a B&B.
Be prepared for a long, amazing, and tasty breakfast.

Absolutely stunning house!! I had never been in such a beautiful old house, let alone stayed in one. The woodwork and decor is phenomenal! It really does feel as if you stepped back in time.
Richard is a perfect host, making my wife and I feel right at home. He gave us suggestions on local sights and dining options. Excellent recommendations! We are definitely going to go back!!

Worth going out of our way for on a recent trip. Just the initial tour of this house by Richard would keep me coming back, but it only gets better from there. Highly recommended.

Can I add about 5 more stars? This place is superb! Everything is clean and nicely decorated. You feel like you’ve stepped back in time and you’re at a far away place. The grounds are neatly kept and there’s so much to look at and take in.
Then, there’s the host... Richard. Richard, you are amazing! You’re humble and kind. Thank you for your warm welcome and suggestions on food when we arrived. We will be back soon and we’ll be sure to tell our friends and family about what an awesome place you have there.
Bonus: The people we stayed in the house with were nice also.

Man.. what a great experience! Richard was a true delight. He waited up for us to arrive past check in time. Upon arrival, he gave us a quick orientation of the house. There was wine available all night as well as tea for us to enjoy whenever we liked. Richard also delivered an Irish cream night cap and chocolates. The house is truly beautiful, a patio space as well as a wonderful study filled with books to sit and read. It was very relaxing. The room was very nice, quiet, clean, and comfortable beds. Breakfast was served at 9am with coffee beforehand. It was nice getting coffee enjoying it on

This is my first time ever staying in a real b&b and this has far surpassed any expectations I could have had.

Richard is by far the best host anyone could ever expect. He remembers all his guests by name. Caters to their every need. I have never been so relaxed or comfortable in my life.

He offers local recommendations. The place is clean and well cared for (even in these Covid times). I have felt safe and secure.

They offer wine throughout the day, night caps, and turn down service that includes preparation of the bed along with chocolate wine and chocolates at bedtime.

Every room

The host was incredibly accommodating and hospitable. He was very welcoming and the house was absolutely beautiful. The host helped us get settled, helped us find a late dinner, and gave us a nice tour of the place. Our room was very large and nicely kept. We were so comfortable and we felt like we were back in time. Breakfast was delicious and was really the cherry on top of the whole stay. 4 courses! And very tasty.
Everything was very elegant and sophisticated and we really enjoyed talking with the host. We would definitely stay here again!

OMG what a beautiful well maintained historic home! You have to stay here if you are in the area! It's quite an experience. Richard, the owner, and the staff are so hospitable. There was a multi course sit down breakfast which was one of the best breakfasts I have had! Also he introduced us to the other guests and it was nice to meet new people and share a meal with them amidst great conversation!
Highly recommended! Richard is extremely thorough!

Richard, the owner, gives tremendous service. The place is gorgeous and impeccably clean. The breakfast has multiple courses. And is lovely: a vegetable frittata, a baked artichoke and mushroom tart, a fruit compote, fresh baked pumpkin bread, fresh baked brown bread with cinnamon, and more. He provides wine and Bailey's in the evenings with turn-down room service and chocolate. The decor is authentic (not cheesy --no stuffed animals here. Lol). Just elegant and fabulous.

This Historic Mansion is really Beautiful. The 5 course home made Breakfast was so special., The King Bed in our suite made it tough to get out of after a great night sleep. We met a wonderful couple also staying here for the first time. And The stories Richard shared with us made our stay so personal. The town of Winona even in the winter is such a nice place to visit. We are planing our return to The Alexander Mansion again

Have you ever visited a historical mansion such as the James J. Hill house in St. Paul or Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, and thought to yourself, "Wouldn't it be great to spend a night here?" That's what the Alexander Mansion offers. The mansion has been restored meticulously, with beautiful carved wood, period chandeliers and every attention to detail. And then it has been amazingly furnished with period pieces by the current owner and innkeeper! But better than the house IS the innkeeper. Richard can regale you with stories of the history of the house, or of Winona or of his

This was my first time at a B&B. Richard, the innkeeper, was excellent. You can tell he cares very deeply about what he does and the beautiful mansion is a testament to that as well. The mansion itself was spectacular. Over 10,000 square feet of majestic rooms and living space. I was surprised by the warmth of the mansion. If you're looking for a great place to stay with very nice people, I would highly recommend the Alexander Mansion!

We take a lot of short trips to Winona to visit our college son and we are always amazed at the friendliness of its people, that is, until today. On the way to Winona I checked out Trip Advisor to see if there was someplace to stay the next time, since we already had reservations for this trip. We found a listing for the Alexander Mansion and decided to stop by. We found the beautiful mansion with the help of the gps and entered its doors. We waited a few minutes and when no one greeted us, my husband said loudly "hello?" A young pleasant woman was coming up from the lower level with

My husband and I recently stayed at the Alexander Mansion for an early anniversary trip. The house is very nice and has lots of neat sitting areas, especially the front porch.

We stayed in Mary's room and it was very comfortable. The bed is a bit small, but nothing terrible.

Richard is an excellent innkeeper. He is very friendly and always wants his guests to be happy. Breakfast was excellent both mornings we were there. He serves 5 courses. Each morning we started with a fruit parfait, then moved on to a sweet course of coffee cake or tea bread, followed by a salad with quiche or frittata

A beautiful historic home that has been meticulously restored. This is the best BnB I have stayed in. Richard, the innkeeper, is a wonderful person, full of knowledge about the history of the home, and current activities in the area. The breakfasts are amazing five course adventures. A slow relaxed pace and plenty of time to visit with the other guests. We stayed in the Alexander suite, and used our sunroom for a small family gathering seven. I highly recommend this place, and look forward to coming back.

The proprietor clearly enjoys running a B&B and works hard at it. He expends a great deal of effort to see that everyone has something to do, places to eat, and so forth. A font of local information. Pro tip: when you arrive, park on the grounds or call on the phone because he will be in the kitchen and can't hear you come in.

The basement suite has a full kitchen. Breakfast was a leisurely five courses spread over an hour and a half of socializing with the other guests. Quite enjoyable.
