Together with the Pacific Zen Institute, directed by John Tarrant Roshi, the Open Source is part of the Pacific Zen School, an innovative koan school focusing on both individual and group koan practice, with a particular appreciation for the longstanding relationship between Zen and the arts. The Open Source also highlights the crucial role of women in the koan tradition and in Zen.
Before becoming an independent entity (co-founded by John and Joan), Pacific Zen Institute (then known as the California Diamond Sangha) was part of the Diamond Sangha founded by Robert Aitken Roshi. The Diamond Sangha, in turn, emerged from the Japanese Sanbo Kyodan lineage. Here's a page of "lineage charts" for Sanbo Kyodan, including Desert Rain Zen and other Open Source teachers.

We are a sweet and intimate meditation community in Oakland, California. Our emphasis is on contemporary practice for modern lives. In our practice we draw on Zen teachings and traditions, as well as contemporary work in psychology, the sciences of complexity and ecosystems, the arts, poetry, philosophy, and social engagement.
The content of the retreat and the amount of time to meditate and to learn will be the same as an "in person" retreat, but the schedule will be looser to suit the medium. Our four wonderful teachers - Senseis Tenney Nathanson, Andrew Palmer, Megan Rundel and Roshi Sarah Bender will each share their wisdom during the retreat.
A retreat can be a physically and psychologically demanding experience. We encourage participation in every activity, though no activities are required. If you have physical limitations that may affect your participation in retreat activities, please list them here; or, if confidential, please let us know here which teacher you would like to speak with before the retreat.
Our resident teacher is Megan Rundel, Sensei. Megan was authorized to teach in the koan Zen tradition by Joan Sutherland, Roshi. She has practiced Zen for over 25 years; she is also a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. Megan is committed to authentic Zen practice and awakening in the midst of our complicated and messy world.
Crimson Gate Meditation Community is part of the Open Source, a network of individuals and communities in the western United States engaged in Zen Buddhist practice together. We emphasize collaboration, the development of authentic American expressions of Zen, and the confluence of koans and creativity.
