A beautiful, Lotus decal, Singer sewing machine from the 1930's. I was fortunate to buy this a few years ago, and recently found a beautiful treadle cabinet for this machine. Sherry copied the image of the painting, her friend made, onto fabric. Then she made a bag in colors that complement to the painting and included the painting in a panel on the side of the bag.
Shelley had a quilt that was falling apart. She decided to cut it and make two pillows out of the parts of the quilt that were still in good condition. Sherry found an art print in Maine, and she was inspired to re-create it out of wool and needle felting. While Norma is not in this picture, she made this bench cushion and the bolster pillows at each end.

Hi! My name is Laura Wirkkala. I have always been interested in handcrafts. I started embroidery by age 8, then knitting and crocheting. My grandmother was always doing craft projects with me and my siblings when we would visit her in Northern Minnesota. In Middle School, we took Home Ec. One quarter was dedicated to cooking and the other to sewing.
6 ft retractable tape measure, an optional but very handy item that only costs about $3. Not to be confused with a metal tape measure from the hardware store. The one that I am referring to is a flexible, coated fabric, tape measure. The casing is usually plastic. If you purchase one, I recommend the Hoescht brand.
Whenever I make a shirt, of which I've made 5 this year, I always turn to an old Singer in a cabinet. The machine only does a straight stitch, but WHAT a straight stitch. Also, the machine is so smooth and quiet and being set into a cabinet, there is support for my project all around the machine. The only time I move away from the Singer is when I go to the serger or make the buttonholes at the end.
Almost three years ago, I retired and wanted to work on my bucket list. I always hoped to work on my sewing skills, but needed guidance. I was so lucky to have found Laura's sewing school! Laura has a wealth of knowledge and helps you sew what YOU want to sew. Recently, Laura taught me how to draft a pattern from one of my favorite skirts.
