In 1928 a group of 6 juniors approached Commodore Joseph E. Jessop about starting a junior sailing program in the club. Jessop, a forward thinking Commodore, decided it would be a good idea, despite the grumblings of several members. The initial objective was to teach "swimming, boat care, racing tactics, and sportsmanship"; 80+ years later we are still following the same objective.
The initial class consisted of Robert Town, the 1928 Jr. Commodore, brothers Gordon Frost, Sr., Albert A. Frost, Jr., Robert Merit, Grant Stone and Walter Fisch. Lessons were taught in Sea Mews and Starlets (a junior trainer that was a smaller version of the popular Star class).

San Diego Yacht Club Commodore Brian Thomas on San Diego County banning recreational boating. The array of container, tanker, and cruise ships in Long Beach Harbor shook up the breeze while the Santa Anas fought to come in all weekend, giving us moderate wind on Saturday resulting in a delayed start and sporty conditions on Sunday.

My grandparents have been taking me to the San Diego yacht club since I was a very small child. I'm now a grandmother myself and felt incredibly nostalgic going back. That said the place does not feel aged it feels classic, very clean and maintained. They've also decorated very nicely for the Christmas season. Several live wreaths and poinsettias and at least five Christmas trees. We were here today on Thursday they had a giant Christmas buffet, about $40 a person they did not stint on the food at all. Gorgeous Southern California weather while sitting out on the patio overlooking San Diego Bay

Visiting here by boat, whether for a weekend or an extended stay, is an experience to savor. The tennis courts and lap pool (opens at 5:30a.m. while the moon is still out) are attractive amenities. It's been quite some time since dining in the restaurant so can only comment on the dessert menu, which I did have sample. Well, let's just say, the atmosphere was pricey considering the miniature slices of cake we sampled. And, if you're from a visiting club, there's an extra surcharge. Still, the view of the Bay was incredible.

This place is ok. People can be really mean. I do not like the Sailing camp and they used to make fun of me.
The food and facilities are 5-star. But many of the people are not. I remember kids were forced to do wallsits, which were just mean and some kids got upset. But overall, it's a good place and some people were really nice!

Super facility and deck, but the weekend dinner menu was horrible. Unless you want seafood, the options are limited to a filet or a burger. Staff was nice, but food spilled on the deck remained for the whole time we were there- it looked like vomit. It can't be that hard to notice- especially right in front of the bar area. Burger was OK, if not greasy. Fries good. Probably not coming back for dining. Bar is fun enough, but not inexpensive like other yacht clubs in San Diego, from Oceanside to Coronado Cays and all in between.

This was my first visit to the Yacht Club. It is a gorgeous venue! The staff and members are all very friendly and helpful! Loved being able to go out on the water and take a tour of the area! The food was average. Wasn't a huge fan of the bbq trio platter. It could've used better seasoning, but other than that, no complaints!

We just had our wedding here Oct. 17th. I can't think of a better place in my wildest dreams. They did everything PERFECT! Amy and Taylor (the catering directors) were the best. They set up everything like I wanted and helped really ease the stress on the day and week of the wedding.
All of the guests raved about their food and the appetizers. We knew the food was good but kind of expected the quality to diminish with hundreds of orders of the same food. We were really impressed. They not only had the food tasting incredible but it was completely on time for our schedule. We were stressed

My server Gustavo at the dining hall was so awesome!! I was having trouble deciding between the fish and chips and the burger and I decided to go with the burger. Then Gustavo brought my plate with a burger AND a small serving of fish and chips on the side of my plate. I was really impressed by how he went above and beyond to try and make me happy. My food tasted great and the view is beautiful.

This is a lovely locale right on the harbor and with walls covered with plaques.
But the food is mediocre. Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday at any mall across the United States has better food.
I go to SDYC for a monthly meeting. While I am not a member, I pay for my lunch so I don't feel disloyal.
I don't think the menu has changed since the late 1950s. SDYC suffers from the same problem as most private clubs and officers clubs on military and Navy bases -- they don't do enough business to attract a real chef. So they go for a menu of standards churned out by formula. Think
