Situated on a short peninsula perched on beautiful Dering Harbor, the Shelter Island Yacht Club has been dedicated to building a community of boaters and sailors for more than 125 years. Members come from as near as Shelter Island and as far as California, England, and Hong Kong, to race, cruise, and enjoy the waters and winds of Dering Harbor and Long Island Sound.

Since its founding in 1886, the Club has been home to a wide variety of boats, from the elegant steam and sailing yachts of the turn-of-the-century, to a succession of one-design fleets, starting after World War I. Today, we have three one-design fleets - the Etchells Fleet 15 and Herreshoff 12 1/2s fleets, which have been racing at the Club since the 1970's, and the newly added Sonar fleet.
Services
Shelter Island is accessible from either the North or South Fork of Long Island via the North Ferry or the South Ferry. Both ferries take cars, bikes and walk-on passengers and run every 10 to 15 minutes during the summer. Each ferry takes approximately 5-10 minutes to cross and reservations are not required.
Membership in the Shelter Island Yacht Club includes the privilege of visiting other clubs that recognize SIYC as a reciprocal organization. Members should contact any club they plan to visit in advance to avoid disappointment upon arrival.

In addition to the list of clubs below, Shelter Island Yacht Club may accommodate members of other legitimate yacht or boating clubs (generally, those having a permanent facility to meet, established by-laws, and elected officers) that in turn recognize SIYC as a reciprocal club.
Since then the membership has been devoted to recreational sailing, one design and PHRF racing, powerboating, cruising and fostering a love of sailing through a very active Junior Sailing Program.

Along with our own racing schedules, we have also hosted regional and national regattas and championship events over the years with strong volunteer support, race management expertise among the membership, and a desire to support and advance the sport at all levels. Our cruising schedule is equally ambitious, and you will see our burgees flying around our local waters, the region, and occasionally around the world.
The Shelter Island Yacht Club fleet dates from 1974, when Samuel Hird sailed H12 "Poppy" from New London to Shelter Island. We are now the largest fleet of H12s in the United States with over 65 boats in our fleet. The Club sponsors weekly races in the waters around Shelter Island with an average of 20 to 26 boats on the starting line during the Summer Series from mid-June to Labor Day, and informal pre and post season racing.
Since 1978, the Shelter Island Yacht Club has hosted Etchells Fleet 15 for summer racing in the waters of eastern long island. The fleet includes a lively cast of high-performance one design sailors who compete on the local and national level.

With regular summer breeze and several nearby flat-water racing venues, the fleet offers a 25-race summer series each Saturday afternoon from June to Labor Day as well as a variety of local, regional and nationally sanctioned regattas. The fleet boasts 15-20 boats depending on the weekend and has been growing in recent years.
