The Club was founded by a group of Orient sailors in 1933, and incorporated in 1940. The original hand sewn burgee is displayed in the present Clubhouse. In the Club's early years, meetings were in living rooms, social events on beaches and races conducted from the apron of the wharf. The brass saluting cannon still in use today dates from this period.
In 1952, following years of inactivity during World War II, the Club leased the former potato sorting bard at the outer end of the Wharf from the Orient Wharf Company to serve as its Clubhouse. The present building dates from 1939, having replaced an earlier structure destroyed in the 1938 hurricane.

For the past 3 years, we have been getting boats together for casual racing on Sunday afternoons. The 23' Sonar was designed by Bruce Kirby, who also designed the Laser. Bruce built the Sonar because he could not find the right boat to get members involved in club racing. He designed the boat to be exciting to race, easy to handle by sailors, and to be spacious and comfortable.
75 years ago the Lightning was designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day-sailor and racing boat. Since then more than 15,540 hulls built for 130 fleets in the US and 17 different countries, the Lightning class is the oldest and best organized one design sailing organization in the world.
