From a small restaurant and store that opened in 1984, India House has grown to become one of Rochester's most decorated and frequented Indian establishments. Om was born in Pathankot, India. He came to the United States to attend graduate school and moved to Rochester after graduation in 1972. Om wanted the food he grew up with to be more accessible in his new community.
Om and his brother Chander opened the first India House restaurant on Park Avenue in Rochester. The brothers continued to grow the business, with the help of Chander's wife, Shobha, and their brother and sister, Brij and Sudha. India House today boasts five establishments across Rochester, Victor, and Webster.

The service was so so today. Food tasted great as far as I could tell. We asked for Chai tea for most of us at the table and I did not receive mine. I requested some later, it was not as good as some I have had elsewhere. It was bitter and missing any sugar. I eat slower than most. I never heard the waitress come over to ask if we were done. The check for the table showed up prior to my finishing. I consider this tacky. Doubt I will go there again.

The service was decent, and i appreciated that they labeled vegan and vegetarian items clearly. the food was only ok. the spicy vindaloo was not very spicy and tasted like hot sauce had been used instead of actual spices, and had a strong vinegar flavor. the potato curry was room temperature and lacked flavor. the chole had a very strong salt flavor. nice server, but would not recommend.

Had a family dinner at India House. Overall the food was good but the service is not very attentive. They could have been more helpful when one of our party spilled a beverage. The lighting is dim and the restaurant has a musty smell. The food was plentiful and we took home a fair amount of leftovers.

The biggest problem with this place was the cook. He is the most ignorant, stuck up, over confident, stubborn cook ever. Which isn't a good thing. My sister ordered chicken biryani, but got veggie instead. The waitress was really nice, but when we asked for another chicken biryani, she replied, "sorry, the chef says he refuses to make a other until you eat that one. But he's really busy right now." We were the oOnly ones there!! The Thali had uncooked potatoes, hard rice, and yogurt that was practically water. The waiter was really nice, and to be honest, I felt bad that she had to deal with such

I had the biryani here and was disappointed. First of all,got vegetable biryani instead of chicken biryani .Plus, the chef didn't seem to care.Second, the biryani rice was chewy and the biryani completely lacked flavor. Finally, the service needs improvement. The buffet wasn't ready and the we were told the chef would take time to cook our meals because they were busy(We were the only people there). In conclusion, please avoid this restaurant!

We wanted to celebrate my husband's last day of classes, so we decided to try a local restaurant. I'm so glad we ended up at India House. The staff was so so friendly, and the food was delicious and served very quickly. We took home a ton (the serving size was massive) and had it again for dinner the next day. It was even better after sitting in its own juices for a day.
I've read some reviews that complain that their food is flavorless but I don't agree at all. It was really flavorful and delicious. The best Indian food we have had in New York thus far.

Ordered delivery. The food was packaged with care to avoid spilling. I enjoyed the makhani chicken very much. It was a generous, flavorful portion. I enjoyed the large beef samosa. The spicy potatoes that came with rice were a nice complement. I was a bit disappointed with the naan that seemed to really lack flavor. I was expecting it to be better than store bought. The rice was a large portion and did not taste bad, but was not very flavorful. I feel like I have gotten better rice in frozen or packaged indian dishes at the supermarket.

Wrote a review 9 months ago about India house. My mom and I decided to try it again and give it one more shot since we have gone to India house for years and years. Again, disappointed. I have since tried other Indian places (like tandoor of India) that seem to get the chicken makhani right, but for some reason India house has backtracked from doing it right, to doing it horribly. The chicken makhani is SUPPOSED to be thick and saucy, creamy with spices, cashews and raisins. And this was a watery, thin sauce with just chicken and none of the other stuff that makes this dish great. my mom and I

We ordered delivery. The packaging was careful and neat to avoid spills. I loved the chicken mekhani, which was flavorful and had plenty of tender chicken chunks. The beef and pea samosa was also good, big enough to share. The basmati rice serving was plentiful and not dried out. However, I thought it lacked flavor. It was good when mixed with sauces from the chicken dish or the accompanying spiced potatoes which packed a spicy punch. The appetizer medley was, in my opinion, a bit overpriced for what was mostly deep fried veggies like eggplant, onion, or cauliflower. I was a bit disappointed in

Ordered on line from the restaurant's website ... not a third party but direct. The restaurant gave me a time of me of a 30 minute wait. Arrived 5 minutes after the time it said it would be ready and I was informed it would be another 20 minutes. Waitress (on the borderline of rude) said the site is never correct yet they fail to fix it. Not only that, but when I got home my order was wrong. I leave a very good tip 20+ percent on all take out due to Covid 19, and do expect good service even if it's take out. Sad, but won't be back. If you can't get your timing right and orders

The food is a joke to Indian cuisine. Tried it twice. And then I read the following article from the local newspaper says it all. There are much better Indian restaurants around, like Thali of India or Raj Mahal who have better food. Take it from a fellow Indian and stay healthy.

Usually this place is a solid 4 out of 5, heck even a 4.5 out of 5, but I have to give it a 3 because of inconsistency overall. Often the portion sizes on delivery are inconsistent, including the naan size. Today I ordered my go to (Kadai Chicken) and naan. The chicken and sauce were great, but the naan looked to be at least a day old and over cooked. It was thin, dry, and hard, and while it didn't taste poorly, it was a let down. I would still recommend this place to anyone looking for a solid comfortable bite to eat.

Sorry to say, but India House has seen better days. They are clearly struggling and really need to reinvent themselves. I will not pick on the many little issues with their appearance and upkeep, but confine my review to their food, which is so so at best. They had one outstanding curry on the buffet, a mushroom masala that was perfectly seasoned and Indian hot. Their naan and onion baji were also acceptable. But the remaining dishes were bland or watery. And they only offer 2/3 the variety of Royal of India, Thali, Tandoor, or Raj Mahal. I truly wish India House the best and hope they can find

This restaurant smells like a wet dog. Nothing seems clean, including the carpet, walls, sticky floors, silverware, plates/bowls. I went for the lunch buffet and nothing was really warm. I'm pretty sure there was a hair in my food. The only people in the restaurant were me, the server, and the hovering owner/manager (I'm assuming) who was micromanaging the server while eating his lunch. I would never go back - too many other good Indian places that are nearby.

I love talking to my one Indian friend. She makes me Sikh with how gorgeous she is. I'm really Hindu her. Buddhist just friends, unfortunately, I wish it were more. So I met her in a Kosher Delhi one time, she told the guy he wasn't cutting the meat properly, and handed him her phone and told him to Calcutta. As in, a professional cutter.
I wanted this place to be amazing. I'm not sure why I tried it given a lot of the reviews, but I really thought their Chicken Madras might be something special. It didn't do anything for me at all. It was very tomato-y and not what I had in

I came here for dinner on Monday night, and we were the only people in the house. The service was very friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the decor and the music.
The Rogan Josh (lamb curry) I ordered was delicious. Many of the stew/curry bases will come with rice. However, the rice will come out on a shared plate, rather than individually... just sayin', so you don't have to go through the awkward "whose rice is this" I did. You can ask for more rice when it's gone. If the service I received is representative of the one you will receive, then you will be asked if you&apos
