An ever-evolving, practical form of self-defense. A game of human chess, that is both mentally stimulating and great exercise. A lifestyle for kids or adults that grows and changes with you whether it be for self defense, competitive sport, physical fitness, or just plain fun. An art, uniquely created by the individual practicing it.
A community, bringing people together from all walks of life, around a common desire to always be pushing ourselves to our limits, always be living healthily, positively, and respectfully. We use a structured approach when teaching our fundamentals classes. It is a philosophy that implements a respect for all people.

The Base Jiu Jitsu was established in Boise, Idaho in 2005 by Professor Mitch Coats although informal instruction started much sooner. This makes The Base Jiu Jitsu the oldest and most established Jiu Jitsu school in the Treasure Valley. We consider ourselves a family oriented sport Jiu Jitsu Academy.
Founder of The Base Training Center, Mitch Coats has been a successful Jiu Jitsu practitioner and competitor. Blazed the trail for Jiu Jitsu in the Treasure Valley and established The Base in 2005. Mitch is a third degree black belt under Alexendre "Gigi" Paiva from Alliance Jiu Jitsu. He is currently pursuing his Juris Doctorate and plans on attending law school at the University of Idaho but still drops in on The Base.
Most people who are looking into jumping into martial arts are looking for one of three things: Self Defense, Self Confidence, and Physical Fitness. The majority of Jiu Jitsu students are usually not interested in competing, even though most academy owners and teachers would encourage it. Even if you never compete, Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to be efficient with what little time we have in our lives today.
We are proud of the culture and the spirit we encourage in our kids program at The Base Jiu Jitsu! We believe in a balance of structure, discipline, fun, and play. Jiu Jitsu should be a reflection of your lifestyle. Every class starts with body mechanics and tumbling awareness, followed by instruction, rolling (sparring), and a game.

I came here yesterday as somebody new to the area and new to jiujitsu, and the instructor Ben was extremely welcoming. He allowed me to try a class while I get a feel for gyms in the area, and even told me all about the other gyms. He was extremely respectful of those gyms, sung their praises and explained what to expect of the vibes at each one. I believe if I choose to train here that I will be in very good hands.

We are from Philly and spent two weeks in Boise with family. Our 7 year old daughter has been taking BJJ at home for 3 months and we didn’t want her to miss any skills while we’re gone.
Professor BJ and his staff were amazing! The teachers were attentive, the skills were targeted/focused and my daughter really benefited from the amount of time the students got to roll with each other.
I wish I could give them more than 5 stars!

My son and I absolutely love this place. Very positive, constructive environment. Everybody, coaches and students, are very laid back and easy to get along with. The entire place is clean and well maintained, and the art if jiu jitsu itself is easily one of my favorite things. We plan on spending a lot of time here and recommend anyone interested, at least give it a shot!

My daughter is 8 she is shy and quiet. She wanted to get into jiu jitsu we found this gym called them and they where very helpful over the phone, told us to come in fill out some paper work (super easy on a tablet) and she’s in they give you a free gi and she started practice that day. Coach Corey and coach Kyle have been helping her a ton. She looks forward to going to practice. Another thing is the kids practice is 5 days a week. Which is great a lot of other places where two and felt like that wasn’t enough. Thank you the base for getting my daughter out of comfort zone and teaching her

We're a Military family who recently received orders to the Boise area. Our kids attended a small Jiu-Jitsu academy in MO. Which we absolutely loved. I wanted to try and find a similar place here in Idaho.
Although The Base isn't small like our other academy, it is fantastic. They offer 5 days a week of training. Including a no gi class. Coach Cory and Coach Kyle are amazing with the kids. We are loving it!

My mini dude has been in Jujitsu for many years. Decided to start competing in tournaments so we spent a considerable amount of time looking for a program that would help him competitively and was fortunate to come across The Base.
I cannot begin to express how great the owner (BJ) and instructors (special shout to Kyle) are. It's been such a great experience for us. You end up feeling like a part of an awesome extended family.

I've experienced nothing but smiles, positive attitudes and motivating teachers! Everyone wants to see you succeed, which adds extra motivation to help your training partners to get better.
I even brought my daughter to watch a couple classes, expecting her to get bored. When she saw other girls rolling around and controlling their sparring buddies with ease, her interest skyrocketed!
Jiu Jitsu is such a humbling and amazing sport! And The Base is the place to learn it!

I stopped in for an open mat, and I was very impressed. I told one of the students there that I was really impressed with the gym. He responded, "Well, everyone hear is really nice and everyone here trains hard."
I thought that was a good summary of what I saw and experienced at The Base. Definitely some tough students here, and every one of them was welcoming and friendly.
The walls are lined with banners, which the team has won at a number of tournaments. This doesn't surprise me. The students here had a really solid game. I would say this is a good gym for those who wish

Have been going for a couple of months now. Great place and probably the best place in the Treasure Valley and beyond to learn grappling and jiu jitsu! Great instructors and welcoming atmosphere. You'll learn faster and better because of the numerous black-belts available who are always willing to help and show you how to improve your game. I'm just having so much fun, I highly recommend this gym!

I just started not even 2 months ago but this is the most fun I've ever had. Ben is extremely friendly and a great instructor pointing out every little detail all his students need to succeed. Very friendly environment that encourages everyone to get better . Not just the instructors teach, but everyone is teaching everyone. No one has been unnecessarily rough and it's a great facility. I come here to have fun and be better, the getting fit and stronger is just added pros. I've been to 2 other bjj places, but this is the one I prefer.

Stopped by for the 12:00 class while in Boise. BJ, the owner, showed great techniques and really good details for different positions. He gave everyone personal attention to make sure they were doing the techniques correctly
All the training partners were very welcoming, respectful, and skilled! Nobody is there to hurt each other. Everyone was just trying to get better and help push one another
Would highly recommend this academy if you are looking for a place to train in Boise. Whether you are a beginner or high level, you will get great training!
They also have Gi's for rent if you are

Life changing.
There is something that happens to a person when they learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or "BJJ". It's been described a multitude of different ways. I think it's best explained by any of the parents with children attending the kids classes. Seriously, go down and ask a parent if they recommend BJJ. I think the answers will amaze most.
I've heard parents speak of the way their kids have changed for the better. I see respectful kids with discipline and maturity. I see kids being comfortable with challenges.
For adults, it's just as transformative. The adult classes are absent of ego, welcoming

I am visiting from California and was hoping to get some training in! I was looking for something close by where I'm staying but a lot of the other academies were either permanently closed or just closed Friday night so i ended up at The Base, a little bit of a drive but i am so glad i did!!! Mitch was very welcoming when i spoke with him on the phone he said he would if i had my Gi to go in talk to Jacob sign the waiver and roll :) i cant tell you how great it is to have academies with an open door policy that are cool&allow you to come in and train from out of town with no affiliation

The only legit place in Boise to learn BJJ. I did my research, this place is as legit as they come.
I expected a bunch of ego-filled meat heads with cauliflower ear, but what I found is a true school where everyone is friendly and helpful. It's like a fraternal brotherhood of really cool guys (and gals). I have seen lots of people join and they are always welcomed warmly and treated with respect.
