I have been dining here for decades. Not regularly. But averaging once every year or two for nearly 40 years. The restaurant hasn't changed all that much. The quality of the food has held up for the most part. Corned beef, pastrami and tongue are all still on point. The portion sizes have gotten a bit smaller. Ok, considerably smaller is more accurate. Which brings me to my only real knock. The prices. This isn't mid town NYC. Averaging $22 to $26 for a smallish sandwich seems a bit excessive for this neck of the woods. With that said. Epps's remains a solid Jewish deli that I will

Today the start of a holiday & I'm sure a large volume day. Ordered to take out a pastrami & a corn beef on rye. The pastrami was tender & flavorful. The corn beef at 19.99 was totally unacceptable. It was tough & tasteless. Nice to serve sub par meat at that price for the holiday. They are so expensive & inconsistent. I don't believe they didn't know. They must test a small piece before slicing. They could use the poor stuff for corn beef & eggs instead of pawning it off at a high price. If I ate it in I would have thrown it back. Been dissatisfied before

Ok..our family has a long history with Eppes. It was my mom's favorite place and we went there often. About 15 years ago we started a family tradition of going every year the day after Thanksgiving. Loved it.
This year, not much. Prices have gone up a lot. I know that supplies etc have but this was really a lot. The light side which was about $15 is now $25. That might be ok if quantity and quality were ok but they're not. All portions are much smaller. The cole slaw ( which was always free) now is a separate price and is tasteless and dry. Tasteless and dry describes my pastrami and

October 2021 Update: Josh, the owner, sent nasty reply to my review. If I can figure out a way to post it here, I will. He did not post it for all to see. In essence, Josh dismissed and insulted me before telling me to get off Yelp.

Josh is THE reason I will not be back at Eppes Essen. He's so busy insulting a customer and not addressing the concerns. I hope people stop going there until he begins to respect his customers with fair prices, and presenting and plating dishes not on the cheap (see sandwich photos below). Eppes has a loyal customer base but Josh is doing everything possible

Best part? Staff was excellent.
We came in for a snack around 2:30 PM.
Prices were so obscene that we almost left. The only thing that kept us there was the fact that we had already opened the complementary pickles & tomatoes.
Mushroom barley soup-exellent, could use a pinch of salt, not on tables, covid mandate I guess, but not offered.
Matzoh ball soup-bland, matzoh ball a flavorless clump of flour and water.
Potato pancake-fair, looked like mashed potato inside.
Potato knish-i've never seen one that big, but quantity over quality does not impress.

The sloppy Joe sandwich seems rather expensive, but you find out why pretty quickly. Best pastrami an corned beef I've ever had. Huge sandwich. If the price is by weight the cost makes sense. Very good. Can't eat a whole one.

I never paid $20 for a corned beef sandwich, but it was the best corned beef I have had in years. My husband and I split it, brought the rest home and had enough corned beef for another sandwich the following day using our own bread. There was still corned beef left over so we made corned beef and eggs the next day. We will definitely go back. Just hope it's as good next time. They also have tables outside which worked out great.

The persons working the cashier and takeout counter are very nice. I went for a late lunch, maybe all of two tables of 2 when I arrived. I am looking very pregnant. I thought the waitress was headed over, as she was close by; she basically looked me over with a side eye like she couldn't believe her eyes and didn't bother asking if I needed a table. What a lovely greeting. A nice busboy then seated me. No hello from the same waitress, just asked if I was ready. I waited a while for my iced tea, which should come out first, but instead came out with my soup. I wasn't impressed by

Our experience was good Until my mother in law asked the older waitress for a cup of coffee. Waitress said the coffee is bad it’s from this morning. This is 6pm. A gentlemen waiter said the coffee is fine he… drinks it all day. The waitress came back to us with a cup of coffee and said I was trying to be honest the coffee is old!!

Ordered the Corn Beef and Patrami sandwich with a side order of coleslaw and a dill pickle. The sandwiches are always delicious here, never had a bad experience or was disappointed with a takeout order once arriving home to devour my meal.

The customer service is always on point as well. The deli guys are always nice, talkative and willing to explain anything if you have a question about a menu item. The cashier was also very pleasant and easy to talk to as I was paying for my order.

The prices have seem to gone up a bit but the sandwiches were always a bit pricey here. The food taste so good

Almost walked past this gem. First time here and the food was beyond fantastic! I had the challah French toast and pastrami on the side. My husband has the corn beef sandwich and my dad had the pastrami on rye. This pastrami, was better than the most famous pastrami joint in NYC. We ended up taking home more pastrami/rye/mustard. Will definitely be making the trip out here again for the wonderful service (Thanks Maria!) and food.

Eppes Essen has the very best Jewish deli food in the area. We’ve eaten there for many, many years. The restaurant is clean and well ventilated. The staff is friendly and attentive. Mostly, though, great food!

Saddened to see that Irving's Deli in Livingston (a lower-priced local option compared to here) closed. Because I had a real hankering for a corned beef and pastrami dressed, I bit the bullet and came here. Service was, as always, very good and prompt. And the meat was great. But the prices...oof

Ordered Eppes from DoorDash, the turkey sandwich was two pieces of sliced bread and a huge heap of dry turkey breast and nothing else -- a completely dry and tasteless sandwich that was almost impossible to eat until we put our own condiments and veggies on it. Very disappointed and not worth the price.

Great place for a corn beef sandwich! A little on the pricey side. I have been going here for years and will continue to do so. They have plenty of sandwich combos be sure to check out other pictures here on yelp. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yup gave it one more chance only because I grew up eating at this place - great memories .....BUT... Obviously their corned beef had been sitting in hot water for a pretty long time....so long that it tasted like water it's a hint of salt. On top of it all, the portions seemed to have been cut in half. Even the pickles were crap. Chopped liver was so sweet with saccharine it could have been a dessert. I just can't do it.

Recently we got take out from Mikki & Al's Noshery in Montclair - FRESH corned beef and pastrami (and amazing lox) with great portions minus

This is a solid 3.5 star place. Food is great, but not worth the price.

My wife and I have come here about 7-8 times or so. We both enjoy their Pastrami and Corned Beef, but don't come more often because it is so expensive.

On our most recent visit, we came during covid. They had a tent outside, that no one was using. It was also 4PM, and it kinda felt like the were prepping for closing mode.

We had 2 customers in front of us. There were 3 people working behind the counter, but 1 was helping customers, the other 2 were wrapping things up. I think one might have been doing phone orders

One of the best deli spots in the area. On the pricey side. But that is what you will do for freshness.
The staff is really friendly. Today I did not dine in. Called in the order and it was just being wrapped up when got there. If you have not seen the sandwiches. They are full of fresh meat.

I do not come here often but when I do. It is one of the best Turkey and Roast beef sandwich. I can never eat the entire sandwich in one setting.

Great job Eppy
