Grandfather Campground
We are convenient to all of the wonderful attractions of the High Country like Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, Linville Falls, Gem Mining and more. Our resort is also convenient to horseback riding, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and so much more. Hundreds of acres are kept by nature herself in the Grandfather State Park that shares our border and is ideal for light to moderate hiking.

Or go a little further to the Parkway trails or Globe area in Pisgah National Forest where you can choose your hiking by level of difficulty and distance. At the grandfather mountain attraction you can see the mile-high swinging bridge, & natural wildlife habitat and more!
Services
You will need to call the office to make reservations and speak to one of us in person. When you email or call, we will need specific dates you are interested in, or a specific site, as our system does not allow us to check "first available". Summer is our busy season, and we regret that often we cannot pick up the phone right away.
We will be expanding the broadband and wifi for increased streaming services. We are unsure at this time if it will have any effect on campers that have their own services through Spectrum/Charter. Additional Adults are$5 each per night; Children 6-16 Years $3 each per night; Children 5 & under FREE.

Needless to say that being a KOA campground suffices, but this one we have stayed at 4 or 5 times.
It is clean, quiet and easily accessible to all the local amenities. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating to campers. They go as far as guiding inexperienced campers in getting in and out of the sites.
I will recommend to anyone who wants to go to a campground that is clean and friendly.
I would give it. 10 Star rating if it was an option.

Jamie, the lady answering the phone was extremely rude. Rude to the point I canceled my reservation half way through making it bc her attitude. Definitely taking my business elsewhere. For the sake of your business I wouldn’t employ Jamie for much longer.

Certain time of the year the hotels are so crazy priced but had a good deal with a nice size cabin. Plenty of room for the amount of people we had. While it is not gold plated with all the bells and whistles, it was great for a quick stay without paying the high price of competing hotels. Surrounding hotels were going for about 200-600 per night and all you got was a room. Out cabin was very spacious and we even had some real estate to start a camp fire not to mention a very large covered porch. The inside of the cabin could have used some update but what can you expect for camp. We had our own

Plenty to do like bike ride around the campground, walk to the river, go to the trout pond to fish for dinner and so much more!! Our dog absolutely loved it, he got to make so many friends as did my husband and I. Always awesome memories made here, be sure to tell the amazing people at the check-in desk that Carolyn sent ya❤️

You know when you find a good campground when things out of their control go wrong. We arrived @ 1:30pm for our 2pm check in. The only problem was that the folks in our site had not checked out and didn't answer their phone. The young lady who checked us in gave us two options and those sites weren't ideal. One was just the wrong place and the 2nd had two dogs in the next door rv barking from the time that we drove up. So, I circled back to the office and was given another option and it was perfect.
Let's see, a staff that wanted us happy, great location for our day trips and a beautiful grass

This campground I located at the base of the seven devils mountain I grew up on 40 years ago. It was suggested to me from my mother who had camped there prior. I didn't expect much but was very impressed. And.. I am not easy Impressed when it comes to camp grounds.. bath rooms were a little sparce but showers were very clean and decently sized. The locating was perfect.. in the nowhere but 15 to 25 minutes from everything! Will definitely be back to stack some rocks in the creek again!

We were just there. We like the campground itself. Didn’t really interact with staff other than checking in they were nice enough
Bath houses were disgusting never cleaned the entire week
My wife did call and all that happened was soap refilled and paper towels
Same trash in floor all week and that was just women’s side never touched the men’s
I’ve been in cleaner truck stops
Found an outhouse in colorado in the middle of the national forest 100s of miles from anything that was cleaner

I and my son loved our experience here. I'm impressed with their fulfilment of camper's needs: basic tent site, water plus electric needs are provided, and cabins. I recommend this campground.
Their bathroom is clean and neat.

Great old campsite with large spots. River and forest tent and RV spaces. Reasonable rates for both.

Rude staff left me feeling awkward and uncomfortable.. can’t park at your tent sites either so be prepared to carry your stuff. It’s basically an RV trailer park with many long term residents

Stayed twice in two trips because we liked it so much! There was even a nice sledding hill and I felt like I was in a Norman Rockwell painting. The creek is pretty as well, so it's nice to walk about.

We absolutely have loved the view! It’s very conveniently located to Hawksnest Snow Tubing, which is the main reason for our trip.

The good, the bad and the not so ugly. I have stayed here in our 32 ft class C camper ohhhh maybe 6 times over the last year. It a really nice place. The Good: staff are helpful and friendly, it is well kept, each site has a fire pit? Many sites are creekside. Many sites have a nice view above, several kinds of affordable cabins that I had not stayed it but look great and are in a good location within the campground. The place is quite a d is located in a great place in Banner Elk. It is big rig friendly, dependable hook-ups (the RV kind that is, I am married). A lot of great looking tent sites

We had a pretty riverside site that was cramped and noisy from the highway (unfortunately the price paid for such a convenient location). Our neighbors placed an easy-up beyond their awning encroaching on our site, which cramped things even more, and ran the outdoor TV 24/7 even when no one was there. The dog area was nice--even provided waste bags and trashcan. I have seen poor reviews on bathroom cleanliness, but with a full hook-up site we had no occasion to check them out. Staff were great. Try to reserve early; they can fill up well in advance even during the week.

Staying at The Grandfather Mountain Campground was a wonderful experience. We were able to make reservations with ease. We arrived at night and it was a challenge placing the camp in our lot. After leveling the camper and unpacking a few things we turned in. The next morning we woke us to a beautiful and peaceful part of this great world created for us. The Watauga River flowed behind the camper and we enjoyed breakfast by the water. I truly enjoyed the entire experience. The staff was welcoming and very helpful.

This review is for the "cabin" we stayed in. Because of our family size (6 total) we had to opt for the largest cabin (number 3) and our mistake, we rented it sight unseen. We were coming in mid November and didn't want to risk the low night temperatures for tent camping (that we normally do) and to the benefit of Grandfather Campground, they are the only campsite in the area open year round. I would, however, suggest finding a cabin rental via vrbo or other cabin website. This cabin was in fact, a single wide trailer. It was dirty- there was hair and mold in the bathroom, the kitchen

The Grandfather Community in Avery County has always been top of my list when it comes to mountain areas to visit due to the elevation, climate and area attractions. But, it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I had ever camped there. I happened onto Grandfather Campground through Google reviews and while they were mixed, we decided to chance it.
Well, I'm SO glad we did!!
We camped in our 26-foot travel trailer in A10 and my in-laws camped in their 26-footer in A12. Both sites were on the creek and perfect for the 3-kids with us who enjoyed playing in it. The campground was overall very
