In 2008, Modern Electric Studio was founded in San Francisco by painter and tattooist Suzanne Shifflett, with the intention of merging the practices of fine art and tattooing. A private studio, Modern Electric launched the career of legendary painter Tanya Wischerath. In 2016 Suzanne passed ownership of the shop to her then apprentice Aaron Nassberg.

With the assistance of the UC Berkeley Art Department, Aaron moved Modern Electric Studios to the East Bay to be part of a growing and vibrant arts community. Aaron has sought to increase the visibility and function of the Gallery aspect of the studio, while still preserving the queer safe and Feminist aspects of its San Francisco roots.

Awesome shop. Great artists. The last tat I got there was part of a fundraiser for the Homeless Action Center. I only have work from Tanya, but I think all the artists there are excellent.

I had been to the shop a number of times with my friends while they were getting tattoos and finally got one of my own this last flash Friday! I'm so in love with the feel of this shop as well as all of the artists. Also, I LOVE my little crow friends drawn by Aaron and tatted by Tayah! I will most certainly be coming back for more work.

I lived coming here! I can to visit the bay and my artist Natasha was so easy to talk to and just made the experience unforgettable. The other artists also enjoy talking with you and actually listen. The environment was really comfortable and I would recommend Natasha and the studio to anyone who wants a meaningful tattoo!
