I've been going to Vito's since the mid-80s, when the law firm I was messenger at introduced me to them (I used to go several times a day to pick-up orders for the lawyers and their meetings.) I am going to miss those subs and salads SO SO SO much. Thank you Vito's for all of the delicious food over the years! Best wishes in your retirements! Well deserved! (but sad for New Haven foodies!)

Discovered this gem when I moved into an office two blocks away. The service is excellent and the food is out of this world. Everything was so fresh - the rolls tasted like they had been baked that morning. My favorite grinder is the prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and Italian red peppers on a roll. Can't wait to go back and try another of their specialty sandwiches! Check it out - you will not be disappointed!

This is a great no-nonsense sandwich shop in downtown. A lot of chain restaurants have moved in to the area lately and Vito's is a family run place. Vito takes the orders and makes the sandwiches, and they are incredibly filling. Stuffed with the best deli meats, cheeses and condiments. The woman behind the counter is also amazing. She is chatty and welcoming and makes you feel like you've been a customer there your whole life.

HOLY COW! THE GODMOTHER IS HANDS-DOWN THE BEST GRINDER I'VE HAD IN YEARS. The bread was like eating a cloud and the dressing cut right through the saltiness of the meats. Generous toppings and such friendly customer service. Vito was working his tail off behind the counter -- and he is clearly the sandwich master of New Haven.

When I walked into Vito's I felt like I was in a deli from the 1950s. The woman and 2 gentlemen behind the counter were polite, welcoming, efficient, but not over bearing. It was a very positive customer service experience. The store front is kind of tucked away on a side street don't be thrown this place rocks.
They have a bunch of special sandwiches and all the standard fare of a deli. I got a chicken cutlet sandwich, a dr brown soda, and a bag chips. They have a nice selection of drinks and crisps.

Great Italian American Deli located in the heart of downtown New Haven...Family Owned and operated, they obviously take a lot of pride in their work...The Specialty sandwiches are Fantastic...Went with the Godmother, Fat Sandwich, Absolutely Delicious, the Sharp Provolone was Genius, although would add Red Peppers to go along with the Banana Peppers next time around...

I discovered Vito's Deli a about a month ago . And I absolutely love it there. I always get the Honeymoon, they put an over average amount of meat on the sandwich. The rolls are always fresh, and it a very friendly atmosphere too. I would recommend Vito's to everyone who is looking for a good Deli.... I go at least 2x a week...

I am literally 100% positive that Vito's deli is literally the best Italian deli in town. So close to downtown, this deli is amazing with portions AND price. Not only are the portions massive, if you order a "sub" and not a "roll" you literally better have not eaten in the past month in order to actually finish it. Just like other local places that are extremely busy for lunch time, you need to call ahead OR place your order online!!! They are not a good place to go during the hectic lunch rush if you have a shortned lunch time, mainly because they make everything fresh

I love this place. These guys have been making some of the best grinders and deli sandwiches in CT for years. It's a no frills type of deli that serves up high quality meats on fresh bread. The order process is simple. You choose your bread, condiments, then meat and that's it...go figure!

Was craving a grinder and came across Vito's, my sub was solid. Turkey/cheddar with some other condiments, although, I do wish I had asked for extra on the sauce & mayo, seemed a bit dry at times.
The service is a bit on the slower side, the place would benefit from having another sub maker, but that's not up to me. The guys making the sandwiches aren't the friendliest, but the lady at the counter is so nice, she makes up for it! Also, no tables/chairs, strictly take out.

Step up to the counter ready to order or you're going to get some good ol fashion Italian side eye from the two men on cold cut duty. I've stopped into Vito's Deli a couple of times in the past few months. I agree with the majority of Yelp reviews -- this is one outstandingly awesome deli !
My favorites are the Vito's combo grinder and the chicken cutlet w/ the Russian dressing & slaw. Both are excellent, I highly recommend you trying those sandwiches. The bread is very fresh, that is important to me. They've been making sandwiches since 1974, they obviously know what they are doing. Generous portions at reasonable prices, this place is a Winner.

I am a sandwich snob. There, I've said it! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I love how something so simple can have such a wide degree of variation from sandwich maker to sandwich maker. And to that end, it really does come down to the artisan that is assembling your sandwich to deliver that consistency that is often lacking when you order the same sandwich from your favorite deli. Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between. Sounds simple, right? Wrong!! Let me explain why it's not as simple as it sounds
