This is the best casual sushi place in town in my opinion. Prices are very reasonable, fish is exceptionally fresh and the rolls are awesome. Plus they've got great specials!

This place is a local secret :) Whenever the suhsi cravings kick in this is our first choice. This last time I've ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice and six step salmon dinner. Overall great quality and delicious!

Really great quality sushi!! I love coming here whenever I'm in the area. The spicy tuna on crispy rice is amazing. And their tea mugs are really cute.

I dined at Sun Sushi earlier this week, and I enjoyed my experience until the very end when I had to use the restroom. When I walked in, I saw what I believe to be a cockroach crawling on the wall. This immediately turned my stomach. Photo attached here - I do not know if Sun Sushi has cockroaches, but there was definitely a large cockroach in the restroom.
Besides that, our waiter was nice and the sushi was good. They were busy that night so there was a bit of time between our rolls coming out, but that’s understandable.
The cockroach, however, will be the reason that I do not go back.

This placed just lacked in flavor. Anything that required some seasoning - the tare for the unagi, marinade of the kaarage chicken, the tentsuyu dipping sauce for fried item and even the miso soup…all just didn’t have any depth of umami. The rolls are small for the price and the raw fish were thinly sliced. The place has good reviews and we were looking forward to trying it but it was a flop for us.

Ordered take out dinner at 6:45pm, received a message saying the food would be ready in 30-45min, but at the end we got our food at 8:15pm. The food was already cold and tasted bad when we got home. All the dishes were ready for a long time but the lady who did pack out was so slow and not familiar with the dishes. She literally checked each takeout receipt like 10 times and still couldn’t figure out which dish belongs to which order. I waited In the restaurant for at least 30 minutes with all the dishes in front of her and she struggled to put the order together, at the end I had to speak out

After a phenomenal experience at Sun Sushi, definitely had to return after the first time!

Volcano Roll - a classic California Roll baked with scallops, sriracha mayo, and eel sauce! Aside from the fact that it somehow came out of the oven cold, this is a roll I would highly recommend as it is one of the more experimental rolls out there that is really flavorful and pairs well with the silky scallops.

Yakiniku Ribs - this decently sized plate of short ribs grilled to tenderness with your traditional Japanese flavors. Not unusual for short ribs, but they were a bit hard to eat, but they tasted

I've lived in Santa Barbara since the 70's and have eaten in every Sushi place in town. That said, Sun Sushi has to be the absolute best Sushi place that has ever been in the entire Santa Barbara area. Ming and his entire staff are professional, efficient and very friendly, which only adds to the great environment at Sun Sushi. And as wonderful as the service and atmosphere are they both pale compared to the level of the food, which is spectacular. Each and every dish I've had there has been so well prepared, so well spiced and or marinated that I've never needed to use soy sauce as it would only

Pleasantly surprising! Amazing, exquisite and out of worldly Sushi, perhaps one of the best I have tried so far. Stay away from the rolls and trust the Sushi master with the 10 piece special if you want the real deal. Otherwise, definitely try the Mexican roll (something different with a kick), the Box ( even though you have to have a PhD in chopstick handling to pick them up) and salmon Del roll. Try the Plum wine in the end if you have never had it before (remember it's quite sweet) but definitely start with Nigori or Senju if you are into them. The place is small and is in a modest neighborhood

This is my joint. I get the sushi lunch special once a week and replace the California roll with spicy tuna. The fish is fresh, especially Tuesday or Wednesday it's pretty much perfect. I know my fish, and have eaten at the best sushi restaurants in LA and Vegas lots of times. Ming is a great guy, great sushi chef. I feel at home, and happy to be a regular. Also, the rice is always perfect, Never a dry grain.

Best Sushi in town!
All the specials are "to die for".
The halibut carpaccio is the bomb and one of my favorites, and the Red Dragon... Tiger Roll... Mexican roll..Dang.. I guess they are all my favorites!

My son is a "sushi snob" and found this place while he was attending UCSB. He and his housemates would try to eat here once a week. While we were visiting..my wife and Tried this place for the first time... and now we are hooked! Reminds of of a small sushi bar in Tokyo that we visited in 2019.

We love to sit at the sushi bar, enjoy the bottles of ORIÓN BEER and talk

I was looking on yelp for a sushi place because I am new to this area and Sun Sushi had so many great reviews so I thought I needed to try it out. When looking at it from the outside it doesn't look like anything special but trust me, the sushi is amazing! I came here with my brother, who is a very picky eater and he said that their beef teriyaki dinner was the best he's ever had. I highly recommend the caterpillar role - the eel was delicious. This place is definitely a must when in SB!

First time trying Sun Sushi and I've truly been missing out! This place came highly recommended and it didn't disappoint.

Food - I didn't know what I was expecting but the sushi was far better than I imagined. I had the Eel Avocado, Salmon Avocado and Yellow Tail Avocado Rolls. The fish in each of them was fresh and firm, very high quality.

Ambience - Located on Upper State in a strip mall, this place is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. The interior is nothing special but it's intimate and has a nice neighborhood sushi bar vibe

Service - Came in on Friday

Yelped the best sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara and this place came on top with nearly 200+ five stars reviews. OMG! I can't believe it! I should have read more reviews or checked the photos in details.

For the mediocre quality and taste, the food here is absolutely overpriced. The bill for 2 person with tips was $100+ for 6 pieces of sushi, two small appetizers, 2 sushi rolls.

In summary, we paid $$$ for dining at a decent/good sushi restaurant but the experience felt like getting street food for a food truck.

The Japanese fried chicken was plain and dry, with no dipping sauce. And

Believe the reviews.
A friend of ours actually recommended a different place, but after looking at their menu and reading reviews and then reading the reviews for Sun Sushi, we knew this was the place to go.
No it's not fancy. Don't go for the atmosphere, go for the amazing food and great service.
The blue fin tuna was like butter.
Literally everything we had was delicious.
Get there early as it's a small place and parking kind of sucks (like most places in SB), but you'll be glad you did, and so will your taste buds!

Without a doubt the best sushi spot in Santa Barbara. Their fish is consistently super fresh every time I go making for delicious rolls. Location is a little random in a shopping center off state street but the quality of food makes up for outdoor dining in the parking lot.

My go to rolls are the salmon or yellow tail delight and the volcano.

I usually just get takeout but last time i went I ate inside and the staff were incredible. Absolutely phenomenal sushi

Best sushi I have had in Santa Barbara in a while! The salmon 6-ways was delicious. I didn't take many photos because I couldn't wait to enjoy my order. We sat at the bar - the Japanese sushi chefs were very busy, yet still very attentive. The staff was very friendly. The choices of fresh fish were varied and well selected.

Whew! This review update is loooong overdue. Yet, they say late is better than never! (Plus now we can always blame the pandemic).

Sun Sushi is my number one sushi spot in Santa Barbara. I don't care what anyone else says but it triumphs over the competition. While the exterior facade is unassuming--in a strip mall off Upper State Street next to the Tee-Off--the freshness, reasonable pricing and being family owned make it shine. You'll notice that the owner is almost always on site working, whether behind the sushi bar making maki or otherwise. Also notice how he goes out of his way

I am not sure how we lived in Santa Barbara for some long without going to sun sushi. This review is for take-out during the pandemic which we have done multiple times. We have always called it in but they also have online ordering. They typically have it ready within 30 minutes. We love to get the salmon and yellowtail sushi as well as rolls such as the Mexican roll, eel avocado roll, and state street roll. Picking up the food is easy and the staff are following covid19 precautions. We always look forward to sushi night!

Damn good delicious tasting sushi. Teriyaki Chicken was bland and the meat was not top of line; otherwise would have rated a 5 star.
We love the Mexican Sushi, Crunchy Roll, Jalapeno, Mixed Tempura, and the sashimi. Was really impressed with the girth of the Tuna Sashimi. Seaweed salad was awesome.
Overall very delicious experience.
Dining outside available.
COVID19 protocols respected. Service with masks and gloves. However, gloves should be changed often because after a while the gloves look filthy.
Give this place a try!
