Services
We consider your pet to be a member of your family. As such, we know your decision regarding your pet's Doctor is an important one. At the Amherst Small Animal Hospital, we gladly accept that important responsibility. You should have the same expectations of our health care as you do of your physician's care.
PREVENTIVE CARE: Preventive care is the most efficient way to manage your pet's health. Examinations, Consultations, and Vaccinations are provided on an appointment basis. This allows us to provide the attention necessary to each of our patients. It is difficult for us to accommodate late arrivals without penalizing our other patients.
The Amherst Small Animal Hospital was originally started by Dr. Clair Joslyn in 1939. The central core of our present building was constructed at that time. Dr. Joslyn passed away shortly there after and his widow sold the practice to a previously retired veterinarian, Dr. Charlie Danforth in 1942.
Although our outward appearance is that of any established veterinary hospital, how we operate is extraordinary. Standard appointment times that are 2 to 3 times the national average: We want to be able to spend the time needed to answer all of your questions and discuss all of your options. We individualize each patient's vaccination plan according to their health status, life style and age.
In keeping with our practice philosophy of staying at the forefront of all aspects of current thinking in veterinary care, we have long employed the concept of low-stress handling at Amherst Small Animal Hospital. Dr Stein earned his Fear Free Certification in 2017. One of our staff members was recently at a specialist's office with her pet, and was frankly horrified with the methods used.

After extensive research and weighing of the pros and cons of surgery, my daughter decided the best option for her 1yo puppy was to have ovarian sparing surgery.
My daughter, an MSW at a Rochester hospital was not going to settle for anything but the best for her puppy. Again after more exhaustive research she decided upon Dr. Stein at Amhurst Small Animal Hospital because of his awards and accomplishments in the area of advanced anesthesia and pain management. I accompanied them on the day of surgery, to enter an unassuming brick building. Looks can be deceiving. Once inside and after meeting

We just moved to Buffalo and have two dogs. I love the idea of happy visits so our dogs look forward to going to the vet. Every employee is amazing here. I was on crutches when we had an appointment and the staff helped me get my fur baby out to the car safely. The vet took the time to thoroughly explain what was going on. It means a lot to find someone I trust with my dogs.

I live close by and thought about switching to them since we moved. Last week, my furbaby passed away in route to the vets office. I first stopped here because they were so close and we were in a dire situation as my dog collapsed suddenly and I was panicked, not knowing what to do. I walked in thankful they were open (it was after5) and asked for help. Told them I don’t know what’s happening, I think my dog is dying or she is already dead. I was completely panicking, I know, but I was but I was told, very coldly, ‘well there’s no dr here’. I asked for a tech or ‘anyone that can help

Dr Stein and his staff have cared for my pets for 20 years. I wouldn't take them anywhere else. I always feel welcome, they answer each and every question, make recommendations and treat my pet as if he was theirs. When I have to bring him in, even on short notice they see him, and fix him right up. We've had two surgeries there and NO problems whatsoever. Dr Stein has even saved an eye we thought was damaged permanently. This is an AWESOME office.

Dr. Stein and staff have been so great with my dog, Sookie. She absolutely LOVES going here and gets very excited to see everyone, which speaks volumes about how she is treated while in their care. I highly recommend them.

Dr Stein saved my pitbulls life. She was butchered by another veterinarian in the southtowns who destroyed her knee in what turns out to have been an unnecessary surgery! He has given her a 2nd chance at a normal life. Dr Stein, Dr Zalenka and the staff are an asset to our veterinarian community. I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone

Staff was very, very rude when I asked questions about their services. Acted annoyed and like she didn't care about anything I asked. When talking about a loved family dog being very sick, I would expect a vet to be understanding and compassionate. But nope, not here.
