Currently we have tables in front of the restaurant and inside on the right and left side upon entering. We have both doors open for good ventilation. Currently we offer Counter Service without table service. For Dine-In: Please don't forget to bring your vaccination card and photo id! In Berkeley, the Health Officer orders to allow dine-in ONLY for fully vaccinated patrons being 12 years or older!
Restaurants have to verify proof by checking both vaccination card and photo id! For your reservation, make sure that everybody brings those; no exceptions can be made. Mondays and Tuesdays are closed. Take-Out, Chilled German beer and wine, whole cakes, grocery and pantry items are available (see Takeout Menu & Online Order).

Solid German food. Schnitzel Sandwich and schnitzel entree were delicious. Prices are reasonable, beer selection is good as you would expect. Service is odd...if you sit outside you pick up the menu and then walk back to counter and give them order. So it is sort of 1/2 service. Also they don't fill up the beer glass to the top. Given the $11 beer and the fact glasses are skinny at the bottom most of the volume you pay for is at the very top of the beer glass, so tell the staff to fill a beer glass full. Seating area outside is clean and relaxing. Will

This place is pretty solid. everything is pretty good, the staff are nice enough, and the location is convenient for berkeley standards.
goulash has wonderful meat texture, but the flavor is lacking something
sausage platter is good, but doesn't have much variety of meat/sausages.
It isn't the best German place around, but German restaurants are pretty rare, and this is the only choice in the area unless you want to get on the freeway for a while. there are places that are a bit better, also a bit cheaper, with more convenient parking, but it comes with a 20 minute drive. So I do

Sausages!!
We were able to make a reservation for our group of 8. Everyone showed their vaccination cards and we ordered at the counter. We started with some Gaumenkitzel Brezels (pretzels) to share plus plenty of German beer for my Dad and brother.
My sausage plate fulfilled all my carnivore desires. It included Nurnberger Bratwurst, Wiener Knackwurste, and Bavarian white sausage plus Spatzle and sauerkraut. I think they must have made it for me special because I don't see it on the menu.
Couple people got the Schnitzel and were really happy with it and my Mom enjoyed a salmon sandwich

I've been coming to Gaumenkitzel for years. I've seen it go through changes but you can still tell there's a lot of love and hard work that's gone into this dining experience.
Trigger warning: this entire post is about eggs and my deep disdain for my fellow American restaurant goers.
Gaumenkitzel is consistently delicious. But I have beef not with the restaurant, but with the patrons.
The patrons have complained some of the most simple but beautifully prepared items off the list. I used to order the farmers breakfast because the eggs were perfect. PERFECTLY folded eggs

I love this place. The last time I was there I had the goulash. It drives my wife crazy but when I really like something, I eat half and then ask if they can box up the rest to take home. I love to have the other half a the house watching a good movie. But this time it was raining and when I went to sit in the car the bag broke and my bright little future evening at home, became a delicious treat and an unexpected delight for my friends,

I have had that little package on my mind whenever I pass the "Kitz" and I will be going back soon, to make up for my clumsy

Gaumenkitzel is a great authentic German restaurant. During Covid they have limited spaces inside (4 tables when I went) and take covid seriously. In order to reduce contact time with your server they ask you to order online the day of your reservation with a note in the order that the food is for your reservation. I had a very good Gaumenkitzel Schnitzel and my partner had the Jagerschnitzel. The food was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend Gaumenkitzel for anyone looking for a covid safe place to get good beer and food.

Late review, but I ordered the $25 special from Berkeley Restaurant Week. It came with weibkohlsalat (blanched green cabbage lightly pickled with apple vinegar, lemon, and mustard), spatzle red beet (cubed red beet, au gratin cheddar cheese, and fresh parsley along with German style cooked potatoes; this is a vegetarian and gluten free option), and some biscotti, which contained nuts (I forget specifically what). I ordered over the phone, gave them the estimated time that I would arrive - which was a little further out than just ASAP since I needed time to get there and I know this is a "slow

We sat outdoors and enjoyed the start of Fall. This organic restaurant with passionate owners Kai and Anja (chef) does not have a microwave nor deep fryer in the kitchen. We started with a light Tomato Soup...Hamburg style with home made yoghurt and basil...the best I have tasted and have it everytime we come here. Then we had the Trio Sausages Grilled (all non-GMO, no preservatives and no fillers) a Bratwurst, a Weiner Knackwurst, and a Bavarian Weisswurst. Served with Red Cabbage Sauerkraut that was amazing with a touch of sweetness and home made SpƤtzle...a winner dish! We progressed to Crispy

I came for here for lunch and the food was ok but still on the pricier side...There was ~ 4 other people total but service was still quite slow. Place is spacious with ample seating and lighting.
I tried the lunch specials: eggs and pork as well as eggs and schnitzel. The snitchzel tasted like movie theatre butter and the sausage was heavily seasoned/salted and still tasted a meat about to go bad. Maybe my palatte isn't quite refined but this place was not too satisfying. I also did not enjoy my "scrambled" egg texture (see picture).
