Union Veterinary Clinic
The Julie Fund is a memorial tribute to the former owner of Union Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Julie Giles. Gifts donated to the Julie fund will be used to help clients and pets who have limited resources. These animals will receive discounted or no-charge examinations, treatment, and medications. Established in 2002, we are a full-service, small animal veterinary clinic providing comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care.

We serve several neighborhoods, including Capitol Hill, H Street Corridor, Atlas District, the Navy Yard, and NOMA. Our staff veterinarians are Dr. Allison Gross, Dr. Melissa Lehmann, Dr. Carey Cornett and Dr. Sophie Stenner. Our clinic includes an in-house pharmacy and laboratory, state-of the-art surgery suite, digital x-ray unit and a closely supervised hospitalization area.
Services
The doctors and staff at Union Veterinary Clinic understand that your pet is a member of your family. We know that quality veterinary care is essential to keeping your pet healthy and happy throughout their life. That's why we are committed to providing the best medicine and customer service.

We provide state-of-the-art, cutting edge medicine, but are small enough to provide the individual care, attention, and consistency you and your pet deserve.
Dr. Gross grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. After graduating from Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she moved to Washington DC. She completed an internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals. After completing the internship she stayed on as a staff veterinarian there. She worked as a relief veterinarian throughout the DC area after leaving FHA, but has been established as a full time veterinarian here since 2007.
We are extremely proud to introduce our new clinic manager, Amy McClosky! Amy has been with Union Veterinary Clinic for the better part of a decade as one of our most skilled Veterinary Technicians. She has transitioned into a leadership role as Ry has taken on broader responsibilities. We will have more about Amy and her past experience posted here in the coming weeks.
Union Veterinary Clinic asks that you call ahead to schedule an appointment with a doctor. The doctor will make every attempt to see scheduled appointments on time; however, emergencies may occur causing us to run behind schedule. Emergency cases will always receive top priority, followed by patients with previously scheduled appointments.
The Julie Fund is a memorial tribute to the former owner of Union Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Julie Giles. Julie had a special place in her heart for kittens and cats, which she spread throughout her life, influencing many others to feel the same way. Gifts donated to the Julie fund will be used to help clients and pets who have limited resources.

Services are fine, no better or worse than most other clinics I’ve used with different pets over the years. Unfortunately, it’s been unreliable with last minute cancellations at bad times leaving customers to scramble and find alternatives.

The staff at Union Veterinary is knowledgeable and friendly. I just moved to DC and am very happy I selected them as the vet for my new cat! Overall very positive experience for me and my pet.

The vet was super kind with my dog and very knowledgeable! Prices were fair and it was a very quick in and out process. Totally recommend!

TL;DR Don't come here if you value convenience or customer service.
We loved going to Union, but will be seeking a new vet after their recent policy changes around medications. Our dog is on a daily medication regimen for thyroid issues and until recently we had no trouble doing auto-ship through Chewy.com every 6 months for both her thyroid meds and her flea/tick/heartworm meds. It was simple, easy, and affordable, and it helped us stick to the regimen.
With their new medication policy they will no longer approve the thyroid medication auto-ship through Chewy - they will ONLY approve the "preventative

I have been taking my dogs to Union Vet since I moved to Capitol Hill 20 years ago. They do a great job.

My most recent experience was having my Welsh terrier Lily's teeth cleaned yesterday. I was very happy with every aspect of the care.

In particular, I appreciated that Dr. Applebee updated me with 2 phone calls during the day that Lily was at the clinic, which included her having anesthesia. Lily is a very important part of our lives, & Dr. Applebee understands & respects that fact.

I moved from overseas and my dog had not been able to necessarily have the same level of care where I was posted. The team was very understanding, talked me through different tests vs. vaccinations in addition to types of illnesses to watch out for in the DC area and helped answer all of my questions. Can't say much on costs as I'm coming from a place where I had house visits for less than $50. :)

I just can’t recommend this vet. We brought two cats here and they were siblings. Four years ago, due to liver failure, we put her brother to sleep and they botched it — he was facing away from us and as soon they sedated him, his heart stopped. And we didn’t have a chance to say good bye. This time, her sister was 19 years old and in rapid declining health. She absolutely hated vets so we didn’t bring her in. Would not take pills or even mixed in food. She wasn’t stupid. And because it was some time since we last brought her in, they said they had to do quality of life exam and kept

After years of supporting this office, I am sad to say that I would no longer recommend. While the support staff at Union are great, it has been a night and day experience working with a vet at another location. Empathy, patience, conversations, and authentic care are things I did not realize were missing until I switched. And cheaper!

I've been going to Union Vet for 13 years and I've always liked the veterinarians, but the reception staff is a mess. More than once they have made mistakes with appointment scheduling, and they argue with me about it and tell me that I said things in previous calls that I never said. It's frustrating because I do like the care that the doctors provide, but I may have to switch to Atlas because dealing with the staff at Union is too stressful.

The staff is so kind to my Maizy - always patient and gentle with her. Dr. Appleby is great! He was thorough, never made me feel rushed, explained options and costs for my dog’s treatment and generally has a stellar bedside manner for animals and their humans. He is also very knowledgeable about Rx and specific conditions in my breed of dog. I recommended him to my friends seeking a vet. Thanks to the rest of staff, as well, who helped with the vaccines and payment. Everything went very smoothly.

We have been taking our dog for nearly one year (dog is less than one year old). She finally had a medical emergency that required immediate treatment and we were told there was no way to see her until the afternoon of the next day. We're seeking a new veterinarian in the area who is willing to see urgent patients quickly. I recommend you find a different veterinary clinic in the case that your pet has an urgent issue since Union Vet cannot be relied on.

Sadly this place has just gone downhill over the years with a firm focus on money over much else. For the sake of the clinic, I hope they see new leadership soon.

It is so hard to find a vet you can trust which we all know. One of the biggest gripe everyone ALWAYS has with vets are their costs. No matter where you go, every single place is expensive! We know this! I truly don't think it's fair to expect anywhere in DC in general to be anything close to affordable BUT quality is the concern here. I have a six pound chiweenie mix who has been seen here multiple times and I have yet to have a bad experience. The staff is kind, they always answer my questions and they truly listen to me when I have concerns. I brought my dog in for a dental cleaning

Today was my first visit after moving into DC. I was surprised at some of the reviews about the front desk crew as I thought they were extraordinarily polite and accommodating. The clinic is very efficient and the doctor is knowledgeable and they have a large staff to get you in and out. My situation is a bit complicated but the Vet was very helpful. I will return a few more times and see how it goes. So far, so good!

This place is a money pit and doesn't really care about the animals. My dog needed three shots the Vet recommended doing two and coming back in two weeks for the third. I did that but after the two weeks, he had to have an exam again ($$) even though he was seen two weeks prior. So needed up paying for the exam and the shot but wasn't told an exam was needed until it was time to pay. I only go there unfortunately because there isn't another in the area.

This place was our go-to while we lived on The Hill around 2015. We moved away, came back...and the place went way downhill. Could never find test results - I had to bring them their own results and quote them from their own notes each time I visited. Chronically misdiagnosed my dog and ordered expensive tests through multiple visits over the same issue for several months. Drove my dog 30 miles away to another vet...and the problem was solved with a month's worth of antibiotics and vitamin C. This place is overwhelmed, understaffed and borderline dangerous to your pet.

We will never come back, really bad experience.
Way overpriced and the way of upselling additional meds is just outrages.
We're away overseas and came back after 4 years and we definitely regret to have done so, never again.

I have had not one pleasant experience with this vet.

Being an animal lover and a first-time dog owner, I am really concerned about my pet and making sure that he is okay. A few months ago, I took my puppy to get his last round of shots, they ended up talking me into getting the Lepto vaccine because we live in the city. The vet convinced me my puppy needed it because of all the rats and mice and saying my puppy would get this disease without this vaccine. I agreed to the vaccine because I thought it was needed and I certainly did not want my dog to get sick. This vaccine almost killed my dog

I can't express how glad I am that I found this vet. I had a horrible experience at another clinic so it was so refreshing to go to a vet like Dr. Yimm who reassured me and was so thorough in his care of my cat, especially during COVID. Can't recommend this place enough!

This is a review I need to start by saying that I am clearly a fool for going here for so long. It is not worth being loyal to this vet, as long-term customers are not a priority anyway.

Most recently, my dog was sick and I tried to get a last minute appointment. I was told to call at 7 AM the next day to get a same-day appointment. I did. While on the phone the admin kept saying oops, no, it's ok, etc.. and sad I was good for a time. Then one last time she says, I am sorry, please hold. She gets back on the phone and says, yeah, the other person was scheduling at the same time, so you can

This business made an appointment two weeks out to bring my sick dog in. I wanted to know how much I would be charged and got so many strange responses then was told there are 5 different receptionists answering me.

They then attacked my lack of proper "vocabulary" to describe his symptoms, and then canceled my appointment within one workday of the actual appointment for simply asking to know my charges previous to being charged. Now my dog will not get the help he needs. It just felt very strange to not be allowed to ask how much I'll be charged.

Terrible customer service. I

I've had excellent visits with Dr. Motorola and Dr. Gross who have treated my dog as their own and highly recommend their veterinary care; however, I have had unpleasant experiences with their front desk in scheduling appointments and billing, particularly with Bryce. Be more customer friendly.
