Dr. James Boone is co-owner of Adams Morgan Animal Hospital. He was born and raised on a farm in North Carolina. After paying his way through professional school, Dr. Boone graduated from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1975. Dr. Boone then settled in Maryland with his wife Barbara.

I brought my two dogs in here for the first time yesterday for a checkup and vaccinations. Dr. Boone and his staff are awesome. They were incredibly patient with my two temperamental Aussies who required a muzzle for their bloodwork and vaccines. The prices are very reasonable considering the location and Dr. Boone is very honest. For example, I inquired about dental cleanings for my pups and he said that it wasn't necessary at this time and even gave me some tips on what treats would help with tartar buildup. He even had his staff build a very detailed estimate for what the cost of a dental

Vet care - I was always pleased with their attention to the animals and advice given to me, especially initially as a very nervous, probably over-eager first-time cat owner. Both doctors and vet techs seemed to remember my cats and have a way with calming them.
Office staff (because there are several negative reviewers on this point) - On occasion over several years people may not have been overly cheery at busy times but they were always professional and patient in explaining prices and then evolving

I've been with this vet since 2011 and they've always exceeded my expectations. Today, during a time of crisis, they failed. My beagle broke his toenail and the quick was exposed, sensitive, and bleeding non stop for over 10 minutes. I explained this when i called them, also noting my dog wouldn't put pressure on his paw and I couldn't stop the bleeding, and without asking my name or checking my dog's chart, I was met with a cold, "Sir. We're booked for today. Let me give you the number for an emergency vet clinic." Her rude and dismissive manner was beneath

Their phone system has had issues on an almost consistent basis which makes it very difficult to get in contact with them. Today their phone system said it is down because it is July 4th (it is September 13th). What if there was an emergency and you needed to contact them? Unacceptable, I’m going to be looking for a new vet that can be reliably contacted.

The staff here is just incredible. I rescued my puppy from a bad situation and called Adams Morgan Animal Hospital, and they squeezed her in the NEXT DAY for a general check up, keep in mind I had never been a client there.
We decided to become regulars at Adams Morgan after that. They set me up on a clear vaccine schedule, answered all my crazy dog mom questions and encouraged me to always call in instead of turning to google. When she got an irritated eye from the dog park, Dr. Boone saw her immediately and helped instruct how to put the eye drops.
I was extremely worried about her spay procedure
We decided to become regulars at Adams Morgan after that. They set me up on a clear vaccine schedule, answered all my crazy dog mom questions and encouraged me to always call in instead of turning to google. I was looking for a Black-owned vet located in DC proper and found this place! It's super convenient (I live downtown); they know my dog well (they call him by name as soon as he walks in); and the doctors know exactly what they are talking about. I love this clinic (and my puppy loves it too!)

These amazing people fit me in at the last possible moment and took fantastic care of my cat Oliver. I found out he had a bladder blockage and they did everything for him. I couldn’t go to the animal urgent care facility and they undoubtedly saved his life. I will be making this his new primary care vet. Can’t recommend enough!

When I arrived a girl was waiting outside and was being told that she needed to do another round of vaccines- she claimed she was not told that they needed to be back to back. The tech said that it "must have been a busy day, they should have." I thought that was an alarming response... this is where we take our pets for their health, let's hope it's not a busy day!!

I got to know about Dr Boone through word of mouth ( a friend takes his dog there) and my new pup loves going to this vet. The staff are really well informed and provide a good balance of loving care, preventative tips, and value. The staff remembers all dogs, and I greatly appreciate that. For example, once when I had a question about my pup and I called in to ask, the next time I called to book her vaccine appointment, they even asked me how she was doing. Dr Boone had come out to answer all my questions patiently on our first visit, which I was most grateful for.

I've been taking my rescue pup to AMAH for the past year or so and can't thank the staff enough for agreeing to see us first thing in the morning recently after I woke up to a scare with my dog. Betsy initially answered the phone and told us to come on over and that my dog could be seen as soon as Dr. Boone Sr. arrived. Dr. Boone and the techs worked us into their busy schedule not once, but twice, when we ended up needing to go back in for a second time later that day. During both visits, Dr. Boone took the time to call me (COVID times) to thoroughly walk me through the test results

I have been going to AMAH for about a year now and have been in many times with my 15yo dog for normal checkups, 12+ laser therapy treatments, and other non-emergency appointments. All of the Veterinarians have been nice, as well as the Vet Techs and receptionists- the office manager, Betsy, has always been especially caring and gentle with my senior dog.

Dr. Boone and the medical staff are incredibly kind and caring. They obviously love animals and their jobs. The staff will also go out of their way to help you and your pets. When our 11 year old dog needed medicine for her hips a nurse went online with me and helped me search stores to find the best price. All our animals (2 cats and a dog) have received excellent care.

I'm sure this vet is adequate for ordinary care. However, I would not come here for any diagnostics.
This vet diagnosed my dog with "mild congestion and old age" when in reality she had a cancerous tumor that had dropped her soft palate and was completely blocking one nostril. This vet did not even examine her nose or throat, even though her symptoms clearly warranted it. (It took another vet 1 look at her throat & nose to identify the problem.)
Finally, you'll also experience an upsell of expensive tests and procedures that won't actually result in an accurate

Unprofessional, sloppy, borderline unsuited to practice, if not certainly inept . I scheduled to have my pup her teeth cleaned, and since she had has a growth in her law, one that she had had for years, with no growth not any discomfort, it was suggested we remove it while under anesthesia for the cleaning. Sounded like a minor nip, I have had a benign growth myself, awake and with minima recovery or discomfort, so seemed simple based o. What I was told and my own experience. Turns out not simple at all and with serious risks.

Dr. Boone and his staff have taken very good care of my fur babies, and I have been very happy with the service here. Big, clean waiting room with a water cooler and coffee for waiting humans. Dog treats for the doggies, but no such luck for the cat types.
Doctors and staff are patient, empathetic and good with the animals. The front desk staff has ranged from incredibly warm to incredibly aloof, but I think that's just the nature of clerical workers these days.
My one complaint is that they don't offer payment plans, and the costs for these things can really add up. My old vet would

I would advise going elsewhere. They're not terrible but they're certainly not exceptional in any way either. It's worth it to travel a little further to another vet.
We used them for about a year and a half since they were walking distance to our home. We were never once greeted warmly by the front desk and definitely never exited with a 'have a nice day' or even a goodbye.
The doctors and back staff are adequate, they definitely never did anything to harm our dog, just provided basic service in a very non-exceptional way.

Rex has been visiting the clinic since he was a puppy and now he is a senior dog. He is one of the best customers as he has so many issues and surgeries taken care of at the Adams Morgan Animal Hospital. Both senior and junior Dr. Boone, Dr. Madden, Erica, Betsy, and all the staff are just amazing. I would not trust anyone else with my dog and he loves coming there all the time. Thank you for being awesome for the last 12 years with Rex!

Dr. Boone (the father) will always hold a very special place in my heart. After my dog Wellington had a seizure, I rushed him to the nearest veterinarian (as I was visiting from NYC). Dr. Boone carefully walked me through every test, every result. He studied the x-rays and ultrasound and microscope with me at his side. He sat with me for… extended periods and talked through the difficult options to consider. I've never seen better bedside manner -- even from a medical doctor.
