Almost every single day, I am asked for color suggestions, be it all over color or highlights/lowlights. There is actually a pretty set science to making these determinations based upon basic color theory. The first step is figuring out whether you have a cool or warm skin tone. Each tone then has two subcategories.

Really unimpressed with this place. It felt more like a factory that I wasn't really welcome in. Not very friendly, chatty and super judgmental. And I hate my haircut and will have to drop another $100 to go have someone else do it properly. All around bad experience. I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

I am so happy with this salon. For a salon open for COVID, they take safety and cleanliness very seriously. i was so impressed with who the salon handles mask wearing, and COVID protocols. For my last experience, Tracey Gransden went above and beyond what any hairstylist I have know has done. I came in for a hair cut and coloring, and she treated me so well, checking in and making sure things were what I wanted. When the color didn't turn out as we originally expected, she worked with me to reschedule a new appointment and get the hair coloring that I wanted for my hair. The level of dedication

I have gotten my haircut by Olivia twice now and could not be happier! I have curly, kinky hair that I've been straightening chemically for 15 years so it's often difficult to work with because it has different textures. Olivia knew exactly how to handle it, and gave me a great cut, while still allowing me to keep the length. I'm so impressed by how well she blew it dry and styled it - because of the texture it's hard to get the hair straight, but she managed to not only get it straight (without using a flat iron!), but also add volume and a nice wave. I adore Laura Braunstein Hair Studio!! My stylist was Deana, but everyone employed there obviously does amazing work. I made this my go-to salon while I was living in NYC for 2.5 years and I was never disappointed. Not only are they entirely affordable, but their work is comparable to any pricey midtown salon. I've recommended this place to several friends who in turn have also made this their main place to get their hair done.

Laura was my hairdresser for a few years when I was living in the Upper West Side and she is the best. The salon is stylish and always perfectly clean. Everyone is friendly and I have always been 100% satisfied (and I am picky!). Laura listens to what her clients want but she is also great at making suggestions. I highly recommend her salon!

Horrible highlights. The ends of my hair burned completely. Bad customer service. Doesn't deserve even one star. I wanted to get more dimensional balayage highlight and at the end I got what you see in the photo. Flat ugly yellow color in the bottom and dark on the top with brassy highlights on the top front of my hair. My hair is completely ruined. Called to complain and get a refund but Laura said I already bought the ticket!!!!!! No refunds!!! Wow unbelievable. Never going back there again. And even is she refunded the money it doesn't cover the damage she did to my hair.

Olivia was AMAZING! It'd been months since my last haircut, so there was a lot of cleaning up to do. I'm so happy with the cut and styling she provided, as well as the advice for continuing hair care she gave me. I was in and out in an hour flat which was great!

Giselle was great! She gave me a much-needed post-quarantine cut, and I've gotten so many compliments! I usually wait to get my hair cut until I visit my parents every few months in Florida since it's difficult to find a reasonable salon in the city, but my cut today was super reasonable. Also an added plus that it's 12 blocks from my apt. I'll definitely be coming back!
Edit: the salon was super safe and clean during Phase II reopening. I was given a N95 mask, everyone was sanitizing, chairs were very far apart, there was a cup for clean and a cup for dirty pens for signing

The salon itself is clean, but quite unsightly. They could use to paint it and spruce it up. It feels very dark and old- not attractive to a modern woman. I spent about 4 hours here just for a partial highlight/haircut. I felt bad for my stylist since it appeared she has been booked about three clients at the same time (not her fault), but a very unpleasant experience for all of us clients waiting with wet hair for upwards of 40 minutes for her to return, etc. She was running around like crazy and even asked the receptionist to come apply toner to my hair to help her out. Never again... I am normally pretty loyal to a hairdresser, and I am willing to put up with their chit chat if the cuts are good. And by chit chat I mean a constant barrage of woeth me I'm on my fourth kid to the third father, can't afford to buy my kids a trailer so I have to stay with my parents, but I am able to start setting up a new salon in beacon so will be moving there..but once you give me a bad cut I am moving on. So I started seeing another hairdresser in this salon asked for a cut like Katie Courics got a cut like KD Lang! It is so bad one side of my hair was about 2 inches

Yeah...lovely manner but 3 months out and my hair still looks like a hideous mullet after their botched layering job--they don't know how to razor cut, and they don't know how to do layers LONG as opposed to these godawful blunt things. AND they refused to give me a refund. This is a great salon for soccer mom types who don't care. I'm going to have to pay thousands in extensions, which was not what i wanted. All my confidence is gone--I used to get compliments on my long, beautiful hair wherever I went, not anymore. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOUR HAIR IS NATURALLY WAVY AND YOU KEEP

Olivia is great!! I have hard hair to work with--curly but growing out a keratin treatment, so half my head is spiral curly and the bottom half is wavy/straight. She was super precise and, while not taking off a lot of length at all, made my hair so much lighter and easier to work with! Idk how she did it--it really seemed like she wasn't cutting much at all, but it made a huge difference in how my hair feels! Thank you olivia!

I travel quite a bit and obsess with being sure my hair does not get any of the grey it so rightly earned. I'm an over 60 guy that loves highlighted hair and the impact it has. Look we all know I'm getting my hair colored so make it stand out! I went to see Deana and she completely understood what I wanted. This is the only salon I'll visit in the city!! I have been a loyal customer for three years and I won't go anywhere else. Their stylists always have the best advice for color and cuts. It's hard to find stylists who understand how to highlight/dye blonde hair well but every time I have gone (even visiting different stylists) it has been flawless!!
I love getting to relax in their fun atmosphere with a glass of complimentary wine (what could be better?). I leave every time so happy, with my hair looking better than I could have imagined.
Definitely recommend for blondes!!!

Months ago, I went in and had a fine haircut. I went to pay (I was assured it was $65 on the phone) and they rang me up for $85. I asked them about the difference and they told me "oh, the stylist charges both amounts but we've already swiped your card and can't give you a refund. What??? I was upset but could do nothing about the situation.
Today after booking an appointment online, I called to ask if I could come early. The staff couldn't find my name and told me that their online system "is weird" and

Charming and lovely salon! Smaller scale hair salon that caters to women, reasonable prices (you can choose from an apprentice, a "diva", or Laura herself!). The stylists listen to you so carefully depending on what you'd like done. I've only gone for hair cuts or trims, but after seeing other customers or viewing the Laura Braunstein Instagram, they have gorgeous colorists on staff as well. I also love that it's a relaxed atmosphere, not pretentious at all & I don't have to make annoying small talk. I especially love working with Geneva - she was so respectful

It was my first time visiting this salon. I booked a double process with Olivia. Her consultation was great - She really tried to understand what I was looking for and what I didn't like about my previous coloring job at another salon. She checked in multiple times during the appointment to make sure I liked the direction we were going with my color.
The salon was welcoming and friendly, not too loud or overcrowded with clients.
Would happily give my experience 5 stars, but I'll wait until I've gone in for a haircut!

I'm thrilled to have discovered Laura Braunstein's salon on the UWS.
I needed to change to a salon that was nearby since I started going to the salon every 6-8 weeks (to cover my grey hair), that is very scary to do this after 10 years at Bumble and Bumble. I'm so happy to have found such a high quality and outstanding salon at Laura Braunstien and it's in the neighborhood. I've now become a loyal client of the salon (and Laura) to have my hair colored, highlights, and cut.
I love the vibe in the salon, Laura is a very calming presence, the place is beautifully decorated

I googled something along the lines of, "best hair salons in the UWS," and found this salon. Booking was easy, prices are competitive (especially by NY standards), and they specialize in blonde hair (but I'm sure they're great at all things hair).
