Many people have questions about various aspects of their pet's surgery, and we hope this information will help. It also explains the decisions you will need to make before your pet's upcoming surgery. Today's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past.
Here at Lakewood Animal Hospital, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that a fever or other illness won't be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout on anesthesia explains this in greater detail.

Wellness care: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" That saying holds true for horses also. As part of our routine care we can provide individual tailored specific vaccinations, individual deworming plans, digital Coggins testing, and dental care. At the time of service we can discuss any issues you may have with your horse including nutritional needs, training programs, geriatric care, etc.
Internal parasites, or worms, are silent thieves and killers. They can cause extensive internal damage without you even realizing your animals are heavily infected. The effects of internal parasites on a horse range from a dull haircoat and unthriftiness to colic and death. Internal parasites lower the horse's resistance to infection, rob the horse of valuable nutrients, and in some cases, cause permanent damage to the internal organs.

My wife & I have been bringing our two cats & one dog to Lakewood for care & boarding for over 10 years! We cannot speak highly enough about these folks - Dr. Michelle & Dr. Scott don't order tests or whatever unless they're absolutely needed. They're both very pragmatic and compassionate. The support staff are all very easy to get along with and just as compassionate. They've given one our cats a nickname & use it so much he answers to it at home!
