OUR UNDERSTANDING is that beauty is not just an aesthetic journey, but a personal one as well. While traveling in India, fellow travelers mentioned an herbalist by the name of Lakshmi - named after the Hindu goddess of beauty and abundance - and simply pointed her location out on our map. Two weeks later, we serendipitously found ourselves atop a cliff in Varkala overlooking the Arabian Sea, experiencing Lakshmi's Ayurvedic treatments.
Lakshmi embodied the quintessential independent woman with a true desire to utilize her skills to benefit others. She not only excelled at her craft but also in expressing her passion for beauty and sharing her knowledge. That profound meeting and experience would change both of our lives and inspire us to create Lakshmi Hair Studio.

I saw Kari at Lakshmi Studio last weekend for a haircut and I'm very happy with the cut and also the service there!
Lakshmi is off 2nd street in old city. They just had the interior and exterior re-done and it looks beautiful. I actually looked into this place on yelp because it looked so nice. (I can't comment on parking since I walked there.)
They are very transparent about their prices online, which I really appreciate being on a budget. My cut with Kari (a stylist) was $65, which I felt was very fair.
I was promptly greeted by two front desk employees (a man and a woman). They

I "found" John 2 years ago after a disastrous visit to another salon (my hair looked like and had the texture of a whisk broom). John is truly a master of his craft, conscientious and willing to take the time to figure out the best way to remedy the messes (yes, unfortunately there have been messes, plural; I am only "home" once or twice a year, so have to rely on others when not in PA). I can walk in and ask him to do whatever he feels is best, cut or color, and walk out feeling fabulous! His coworkers have always been friendly and courteous, to boot. Win-win.

Had not gotten a haircut in over a year due to pandemic concerns and my former salon closed. First time at Lakshmi and struck by how clean it was! Got a GREAT haircut from Vinny! I feel lucky to have had been set up with him and will definitely return and request him. Stations are well spaced and I had my own mask on for the entire session.

Made an apt 3 wks in advance with Robin for a permanent wave. Received a phone call the day of that the apt was being canceled d/t a family emergency. I do not have availability to come in during the wk which is why I made an apt for Sunday. I understand family emergencies come up but as a brand new client it seems like I would have been fit in with someone else instead of offered another apt almost a week later. Not rescheduling here

When I first moved to Philly, about 6 years ago, I bounced around to a few different salons/barbers trying to find the right fit. I tried probably about a dozen or so spots. I finally settled on Lakshmi. I have been getting my haircut by Joe for I think about 4 years now. Joe is super personable, easy to work with and gets what I'm going for really well. Lakshmi is a little pricier than other places I've been, but I seem to be getting what I pay for. I always feel well handled here, and I've never left unhappy with my haircut. I am always nervous getting my hair cut because I'm very particular about how I like it. I go to Lakshmi because I know I can trust the stylists. On my most recent visit, Kyle cut my hair (two days before my birthday so I was even more nervous) but I couldn't have had a better experience. The salon was very Covid conscious. Kyle listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me just that. I couldn't have been happier with my experience and new look. Highly recommend.

Another visit and I'm pleased. Color was done and I feel like myself. Blended and no roots. That's the best. I hated quarantine. Thanks to the staff at Lakshmi for being there during this time.
I'm not sure and I hope this posts. The service is amazing and COVID safe. I did some highlights which were perfect. I'm a blond but like variation. They are under such pressure and I am so happy they are open. Please support them.

I came to Lakshmi right before quarantine started back in March 2020, and once the salon opened up, I was about due for another appointment. Everyone here is extremely nice and welcoming, and the salon is kept comfortable and clean. Joe Matteo has done my hair both times, and both times I was extremely happy with how it turned out. He makes his clients feel comfortable and explains everything he is going to do. His knowledge and love for what he does really shows. I love this salon and the stylist and will be coming here for the foreseeable future.

I'm updating this review because it was November when I stopped going to Lakshmi. Here is my hair 4 months later. This has been a nightmare. I advise that you do not go to Joe Matteo. He started out great then something took a turn. Very nice guy, but clearly that doesn't mean much when it comes to knowing hair. I pray it starts to grow back soon. It just stopped falling out. My hair was not layered. The hair was burned off.

I have been getting my hair cut by Joe Matteo for 25 years or more and followed him from another salon. I love Joe's creativity -- I have short hair and he is able to change my look time after time. He also colors my hair and I have been everything from platinum to auburn and the color always looks great. I trust him completely with my hair. He is a great stylist and even better than that, he is a great person. He really cares about his clients and works hard to make them happy. Give Joe Matteo a try -- you will not be disappointed.

We talked at length upon meeting because he wanted me to be sure I knew what a perm meant. I assured him I was ready for the risk and stuck on getting big curls. I liked that he trusted me to know what I wanted. I've been talked out of color and cuts in the past because a stylist didn't think I wanted what I said I wanted. The perm came out great.

Got a cut and color here both of which. What I did not appreciate was that even if you pay for a master stylist, the color is done by the assistant. I don't mind getting the wash by someone else but didn't like having only a few minutes interaction with the stylist. Not sure if this is a norm with the studio or they were just overbooked.
Some of the color wasn't washed off my ears and hairline which I noticed at home and washed off. Just for the money I feel like it was an okay experience.

Like a total creeper after staring at a woman on the EL for longer than it was comfortable, I asked her where she had gotten her hair cut. Like mine, she had a loose curl and was a brunette, and her hair was just... effortless and beautifully cut. As she breathed a sigh of relief that I wasn't going to attack her, she told me that it had been the handiwork of John from Lakshmi, so off I went to inquire whether he was taking on new clients, and how soon I could make an appointment.

Kyle at Lakshmi is amazing. She has been my sylist for almost 4 years. It is so important that you trust the person cutting and coloring your hair because it is such a big part of you (or at least it is for me). I put my utmost faith in Kyle's hands. She has helped me keep my hair looking great at all different lengths and my color is impeccable. I am exactly the right shade of blonde for my skin color and my highlights are very natural looking which is very important to me. Kyle always knows exactly what I want even if I do not communicate it particularly well. I can not say enough good

I've been going to Michelle now for 2 years. I'm very particular about my blonde and she has been able to achieve varying degrees of dimension. She is careful and precise, yet very fast with her highlights. I also had Ally do blonde highlights in Michelle's absence and thought she was great as well! I'd stick with either of them if you are looking for blonde. The studio itself is very beautiful, and used to be an art studio so the lighting is great.

I just moved to the area and needed a new salon to get my normal routine trim. Every time I walked by Lakshmi it was packed with clients, so I figured it had to be good. Being that I do not trust all salons (bad experiences in the past), I was a bit nervous.

I have been going to Lakshmi for a couple months now because I followed my stylist, Amanda, from her previous studio because she is the best! Really, I can have the most difficult hair to manage but she does an excellent job. I don't think my hair has ever grown out beautifully and healthy. She gives great haircuts (I have gotten quite a few) but her skills at hair color are: WOW.
Last week, I went in to go "blond" from my natural dark dark hair. Amanda definitely took her time to ensure my hair stayed healthy throughout the process. Now to the salon...
