We maintain low teacher-child ratios, ensuring a multitude of opportunities for meaningful interaction. Classroom spaces are designed to create a home-like, rather than an institutional feel for the children. We hire stable, well-educated teachers to ensure high-quality, consistent care and education for children.

Services
Children thrive in small groups. Our program serves 33 children: 8 toddlers, 8-10 middlers, and 15-17 preschoolers, each with two teachers. Children stay in the same classrooms with the same teachers and peer groups from September through August then the children move as a group to the next classroom.
In 1986, Lakewood Avenue Children's School started in a 1924 bungalow with good bones and a lovely front porch. When renovating this old house with the purpose to make it a residentially based school, our beautiful classrooms and outdoor environments were designed and constructed with intention, specifically to meet the needs of young children.
Lakewood Avenue Children's School, a preschool program located in Durham, NC, is an award-winning early childcare program. Mary Y. Bridgers Child Care Provided Award, presented to Stephanie Drumheller in recognition of making a difference for children, families and the community by providing outstanding early care and education.
To make sure that our philosophies for children align with your family's, a tour of our program is required prior to application. We typically offer individual family tours weekday mornings at 9:30 beginning in October for the following school year. Due to increased health and safety measures, we are currently sharing a virtual tour and holding admissions conversations via phone or video chat.
