Located in a beautiful wooded setting in Durham - our environment is designed to promote exploration, adventure and productive play. Our PlayHouse serves children ages 1-5 years in our preschool and kindergarten classrooms, and elementary students at The Studio School of Durham. We believe that children are active participants in their own learning.
That's why we encourage them to ask questions, to explore the world around them, and to share what they discover. It's why we develop our classroom projects based on the interests of the children themselves. And it's why we like them to get dirty.

Our Durham school was designed for maximum natural light and is backed by protected green space, making it an urban Eden for our children. Large, panoramic windows in our six classrooms look out onto a wooded nature trail make it possible for the students of Our PlayHouse to continue their connections with nature from inside their classrooms.
The Studio School of Durham is the new elementary program extended from Our PlayHouse Preschool and Kindergarten. Our educational approach is rooted in discovery, academic mastery, and a collaborative, project based approach. At the Studio School we believe that a learning environment should be a place for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and character building.
Loris Malaguzzi, the founder of the Reggio Emilia preschools, often spoke of learning as a "tangle of spaghetti, rather than a linear path." Our progressive preschool and kindergarten learning environments offer each student their own emergent path to learning. The focus on the whole child starts with helping each individual student build the social emotional foundations that they will need both in and out of the classroom environment.
Our PlayHouse offers a full-day, full-week pre-kindergarten classroom with a low student-teacher ratio. While focusing on child-led, inquiry-based projects, children learn to plan, research, explore, and observe, all while gaining important pre-kindergarten academic skills within the context of authentic and meaningful play.
The summer camps at Our PlayHouse encourage hands-on learning as children explore their interests in the indoor and outdoor classrooms. As children talk, hypothesize and problem solve with their peers, they gain a richer understanding of each topic. Summer camps are for children age 2-5, with morning (8:30am-12:30 pm) and extended day (3:00pm) options.

My wife and I made an appointment to visit. When we arrived, a few minutes early, as any respectable couple would, we were not received or greeted or anything! In fact, two of the staff turned their backs on us! I'd also say it was very unusual for us to be able to walk inside, walk around without anyone asking us who we were or what we're doing. I won't bother going into the logistics of the parking lot and the dump of a playground we saw. What an awful way to make an appointment! My advice is go somewhere else where they actually care and want to do business.
