Hemlock Bluffs Aikido is pleased to host a seminar taught by Andrew Sato, Nanadan Aikikai and Chief Instructor of the Aikido World Alliance. At Hemlock Bluffs Aikido, we don't have kids' classes, but we do have intergenerational classes. In 2010, our current Dojo Cho, Tammy Gordon, started training with her family, taking the same classes, learning the same techniques, and doing the same belt tests.

Aikido is a defensive martial art practiced around the world; it emphasizes blending with an attacker to redirect the energy of the attack. It emerged as a distinctive martial art in twentieth century Japan, but it's based on much older, traditional teachings. Developed by Morihei Ueshiba, now called O Sensei or "Great Teacher, " aikido translates as "the way of harmony."
We require monthly dues of $45 per person ($35 if you are a full time student or unemployed). These are paid at first of the month and cover basic overhead expenses. Current members should check with the Dojo Cho to make sure your e-mail address is enabled for the HBA Members' Materials folder so you can access the AWA Student Manual, testing sheets, video references for kyu tests, forms, and a monthly training hours report.
New members take their first classes on the first Tuesday of the month. On your first day, your instructor will be there early to answer questions and help you to fill out the application form and get oriented to the dojo. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, and be sure to remove jewelry and make-up before class.
Aikido is an art that has the power to bring people together, which is one of the reasons I love it. I came to Aikido in 2010, when my then 9-year-old asked to try a martial art. Inspired by Aikido's philosophies, I too joined the dojo, benefiting greatly from the teachings of Richard Price Sensei at Kure Beach Aikido and John Lothes Sensei at UNCW Aikido Club.
