You can't do much to detour an oncoming storm, but you can take action now to protect your home and save money. A $300 wind mitigation inspection might be a good place to start. Houses that have been built or improved to withstand windstorms could qualify for (over) $1,000 in discounts on wind insurance premiums.
I finally got the numbers back from Insurance. The inspection resulted in a $595 premium reduction. Not bad for a modest valued house in a non wind-born debris area. The materials and inspection cost will have a payback of less than a year at that rate, which you can't beat for a house expense. Consider me another satisfied customer, and I will definitely refer those I know who could benefit.
Typically performed at the request of the insurance company to determine the age and condition of the four major systems in the home. This includes the roof, heating & air conditioning, electrical and plumbing systems. This is currently only being required by Citizens Insurance of Florida. They usually require this inspection to be done on homes older than 25 years when it is unknown when the last roof replacement was done.
When we come into your home to perform a Wind Mitigation Inspection we will start out by inspecting your home in seven different categories. This includes inspecting, taking pictures and documenting certain features of your home which will allow you to receive a discount from your insurance company.
We hope that every home we inspect meets seven out of seven of the Uniform Inspection Form OIR-B1-1802 categories. For those that don't we encourage the homeowners to upgrade their homes so they can be safer, stronger and save more money on their homeowners insurance. These upgrades should always be performed by a licensed contractor.
