Since 1979, Pacific Rim is the oldest non-sport martial arts program in the Portland Metropolitan Area and has been internationally recognized as a model for developing successful martial artists and exceptional people. Pacific Rim Martial Arts Academy is a rare jewel in the martial arts community that is passing on a legacy of faithfulness to a long tradition of martial arts training that goes back unbroken to the middle of the last century.

Founded in the spring of 1979 by Grandmaster James R. Garrison, Pacific Rim Martial Arts Academy has been offering martial arts classes for juniors and adults for more than 37 years, continuing a long history of passing on the kind of tradition that takes several lifetimes to acquire. Our Head Instructor, Mr. Michael Martyn began his training at Pacific Rim in 1981 and spent more than 30 years as Mr. Garrison's direct student.

*UPDATE*
My now 10 year old and his 5 year old bother are both Judoka at PRMAA. It has been an absolute blessing and I am so proud of both boys. The oldest has been training 2/3x week for 3 years now and has started training with the Adults due to his ability and achieved belt rank. His little brother has been coming 2x/wk to the 4-6yr Judo class since the summer and just loves it.
They are developing into amazing little men from everything they have been learning about focus, respect, courage, disciple, self defense and self reliance since becoming part of the PRMAA family.

I walked in off the street inquiring about classes and the PRMAA staff made me feel very welcome. Mr. Martin and his staff of excellent teachers are patient and accommodate all levels, such as myself ...an adult beginner with no experience, to black belts acquiring more skills in Judo, Hapkido, Aikido and Japanese Sword fighting. PRMAA teaches all levels from children to adults and whether you are a quick learner or a past-their-prime adult, such as myself, that is a bit slower, you are welcomed into the family.

It has been 2 years since my kids joined Pacific Rim Martial Art Academy, and it is one of the best things that I have done for my kids. On top of learning Hapkido and Judo, they learn team and individual work, discipline, respect, and they are having FUN. Friendly instructors, and family friendly.

I've practiced Iaido here for several months now, starting out as a newbie. This dojo is very professional with an abundance of space on the mats to handle their students. The instructors are well informed, and it's a very friendly space.

It had been six years since I had lasted trained in judo and I was a bit apprehensive about starting up again. I contacted Sensei Martyn via email and he encouraged me to go by for a visit during their Tuesday adult class. He and his staff are super friendly and I immediately felt a sense of belonging. Whether you are a seasoned judoka or just starting, they treat everyone with respect and really focus on the core fundamentals of judo. I am so glad that I am training again and even happier to be part of this family. Thank you very much, Sensei. See you on the mat.

Just started back up in Judo after many, many years lapsed. Very happy I found PRMAA. The facility is top notch, the instructors work you hard but always with a kind heart and there is a very diverse student base (from novices to advanced). Have both my kids enrolled and the kids class is just as good. Highly recommend to anyone thinking of starting up.

We found Pacific Rim Martial Arts Academy about a year ago and could not be happier. Fantastic all around experience! Great instructors, the perfect balance of discipline and a nurturing environment. They bring in international instructors to supplement and enhance the school throughout the year too. We would highly recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts.

Both my kids are taking Judo (4 and 6 yo).
Prior to PRMAA ,we went to a few other Martial Arts schools in town, we weren't 100% happy with any of them. Mr Martyn and Chonggi are outstanding with the kids. Very patient, they encourage ,they praise ,they teach the right way. The dojo is very clean and spacious. The kids have fun, exercise and learn at the same time. It's helped a lot with my son's behavior as well. So glad we found this amazing academy.

Hidden gem of Tigard/Portland area. I researched a lot trying to find a great martial art school (1) in a brand-new, nice and clean facility (2) and Pacific Rim and hands down the best place in the area. Visited just to take a look at the facility and ended up buying my Gi (judo uniform) the same day and starting my Judo classes. I've been to 4 classes and enjoy the place, the coaches, small group size and everything about it so far. Great place. Now I am about to join hapkido, hybrid martial art that combines striking and grappling. I highly encourage to take an evening to visit it and you won
